I've been running 85 octane in my 98 GTP for ~60k miles without issue (I have 136k now).

I've also added a 3.2 pulley about 25k miles ago and keep running the "junk" without A SINGLE issue. I've tested it with a scanner and can only manage intermittent bursts of 4* KR at extended WOT.

I've not blown up my engine, chipped a piston, thrown any codes, lost mileage, or any of the other horror stories that you can ready about here and elsewhere.

If you search, you will see a long thread regarding this subject.

I'm in Denver with less oxygen and I've contended that it results in less knock.

If I were you, I would fill up on the free stuff, get a scanner, and see how much knock you get.

As others have and will caution you - you run less than 93 octane at your own risk. Like anything else, it's a tradeoff and you need to decide for yourself what the risk is worth.

I can't guarantee you will be as lucky as me, but it's certainly worth a shot.

Where the hell do you get 85 octane? The lowest I've ever seen is 87.

Any high altitude location will have lower octane gas - I live in Denver.

My choices at ANY gas station in Colorado is between 85 to 89 I believe (I run the latter in my GTO). You can't get higher octane ratings as it's pointless at altitude.

With less air density and less O2 density, you need less resistance to preignition (what higher octane provides).
