Hey guys, just replaced my belts today as they were squeaking and slipping. I noticed that when the old belt (SC belt) was on, there was a decent gap between it and the divider on the crank pulley. I was able to put the new belt on a little closer with a smaller gap, but when I turned over the engine, it went back to the larger gap. The belt seems to be mounted well on all the other pulleys - is this gap supposed to be there?

the belt is going to ride where it wants to ride. is it coming in contact with all of the grooves correctly?

Yeah. It's right up to the outer edge of the crank pulley, maybe a little over it, don't remember quite at the moment.

If it's over the edge it's too far out. Make sure all the ribs are sitting in a groove. There should be no gap

Mine has a real small gap. As long as you're not hanging over the outer edge of the crank pulley, you're good. If you are, you'll know, because it'll squeal like a stuck pig.

Pictures say 1000 words. The crank is in the center of the picture. You can see it's got a very small overlap, and a decent gap to the divider on the pulley. If I move it over, though, it just moves back. Could it have something to do with the belt position on the smooth pullies?

Hmmm thats too far over. Do you have a reduced S/C pulley? I accidentally bought a stock belt when I was running a reduced pulley, and it did that. If not, make sure that the belt is sat fully on the crank. It may look like it is on top, but you may have missed a groove on the back and underside of it. You gotta squeeze your hand back by the oil filter and feel.

Guess that was all. Reseated the belt and stuck my hand way down there and made sure it was on all through the bottom - sure enough, it stays put.

There's six grooves on the crank and there's six grooves on the pulley. Make it happen. Feel with your hand, pull the tire to see it, do whatever it takes to be sure you put it on properly and it's sitting properly. Often a belt moves on the first start up. Put it where it belongs a second time if needed.
None of this, big gap, little gap stuff... 6 grooves and 6 ribs. Don't put the square block through the round hole just because you have a good BFH.
