Removing Crank Pulley

I'm trying to get the Crank Pulley/Harmonic Balancer off of the block. The bolt is out, and the block is not in a car. I've rented a couple different tools, the gear puller won't reach all the way around the gear; I've seen somebody do it with a harmonic balancer puller by putting bolts through the holes in the front, but i don't know how because they're not threaded and any pressure just pulls the bolts out. Anybody done this before? Any tips or helpful info?
 


there are threaded holes that you NEED to thread the puller into and the big middle bolt pulls the balancer off. if youre using a claw puller, youre doing it wrong.
 
itll look a lot like this:

you'll need to make sure the threads on the middle bolt dont come into contact with the threads on the inside of the crank bolt hole so youll want to put something in there to keep them seperate. i used the small 3/8" ratchet extension.
 
dont let the big black bolts threads touch the threads on the inner bolt hole for the crank bolt. if you do then your crank bolt has a tendency to not go back where its supposed to.

and yes, youll have to buy 3 of the correct screws and complimenting washers so they dont slip through. i still have it all in my tool box at home in case i need to do it again.
 


the HB puller kit came with a little tip to go on the end of the black screw that keeps it from going in the crank bolt hole, will that work or does the black screw have to go inside? i'm feeling like it has to go in
 
You dont wanna touch the middle threads in any way I used a old crank bolt with the bolt head wacked off and a standard puller with the 3 correct size bolts worked fin Or as others have done put an 3/8 entention in the holt and use that to push against
 
ok... well,
you guys can officially pull my rookie card now.

i kept putting bolts into the holes and everything, but they kept stripping the holes, so i would have to get bigger bolts, and repeat. this went on until i got pissed enough to take the nearest BFH and beat the thing clean off the block. it wasn't until then that i realized that...

the bolts for the puller actually did thread in these holes. it just takes some finagiling to get them to line up.
 
are you sure? they weren't threaded, and the little ones are lined up right behind the ones i ruined. and i easily found bolts that threaded into them. maybe i just dicked it up from the start

next question is, how does it go back on? lol
 
yeah, you thread into the little holes, that are through those big holes. they are fairly hard to line up, to be honest.

goes back on by you lining it all up and impacting it back on with the crank bolt. dont shear the keyway and key by not having it lined up and wailing on it.
 
if i had known they were there, i'm sure i would have agreed lol.

just so i'm clear on some of this stuff, the harmonic balancer is in that pulley, right? and, once again, is there any trick to getting it back on when i go to do my top swap?
 
that whole thing, the crank pulley, is the harmonic balancer. it just has weights on the back of it to dampen the cranks vibrations.
 


that's kinda what i figured. and you have to switch it out to run the second belt? i read somewhere you can keep the stock one, but you can't go lower than a 3.25 supercharger pulley
