Has anyone ever moved the stock MAF to be kind of like a card style one?

With the way my intake is setup I could probably cut a hole in the top and mount the MAF in there, then clean all the **** out of the stock TB.

This shouldnt effect the MAF readings at all should it?

you can move it all you want, but sealing it is going to be another issue. it'll probably be easiest to make a mounting plate and weld it on a steel pipe. however, why do you want to do this? you do know there are external MAF sensors that we can use already on the market, right?

if youre doing it because you want to smooth out the throttle body, dont even bother. you won't see any gains from it due to the throttle body not being that big to begin with. you also wont need a bigger throttle body until you are fairly well modified. mod list?

You can block off the MAF portion of the factory TB and run a external LQ4 MAF if you want too...they are cheap. Worth it? Only if your cammed and running a tiny pulley. Gains? None. You will need a tune...so it sounds like a waste of time to me IMO.

What's the main difference between the stock maf and the lq4? Is it just easier to tune?

Bigger= Higher ceiling. Most do this because there running a Different TB and are maxing out the stock maf frequency which will cause misfires and fueling issues

The amount of wrong info in this thread is staggering...

you can move it all you want, but sealing it is going to be another issue.
The maf itself is VERY VERY sensitive to changes in orientation, or even the tubing that connects to your throttle body (screens limit this phenomenon). "sealing" it is really not an issue at all.

if youre doing it because you want to smooth out the throttle body, dont even bother.
There is quite a bit of room to be gained in the throttle body by boring it out in the maf area... there is tons of junk cramped up there. if you have a 97/98 TB you have tons of gains going to a 99 style maf, and porting the TB accordingly.

Worth it? Only if your cammed and running a tiny pulley. Gains? None.
Having installed many onto mostly lightly modded setups... I can say this is quite false. The m90 is deathly dependent on intake flow enhancements.

    Bigger= Higher ceiling.
True, but by a 2% margin.... You are much better off going to another style of maf to gain head room over stock as LQ4's are nearly the same as stock when it comes to peak flow limits.

why would orientation mean anything so long as the filament is out in the tube somewhere? i agree that you want it to have laminar flow across it, but other than that it shouldnt matter where it is so long as it is close enough to the throttle body that you won't have a ton of space inbetween to throw off the ability to tune it well.

Air does not flow like a liquid.

    Lightly modded...right.

But would you put an aftermarket MAF/Larger TB on a stock car?

    Probably not.

So what your telling me is the LQ4 reads the same freq as the L67 Maf given the same exact setups? WHen I say Higher ceilings I invision going to the Lq much like when I went from a stock L36 tb to a l67 the maf freq droped about 300 Hz. (the L36 gets like .021 grams of air a sec and the GTP .024 GPS). I dont have any experiance with Lq4's But I could see the fact that its in a much larger part of the intake the Freq would drop even further and give you a much Higher ceiling. So if you were hitting 11,500 on a l67 you might be around 10,000 on the lq4. Am i not correct?

You might bring a 11.5k 99 maf down to 11.35-11.4 on a LQ4... I dont have the tables open in front of me, but you basically cant run a LQ4 on anything more than like a rockers/intercooler setup. A few setups I have done with a xp/s1x, headers, and a gen5 will all max out a LQ4.

So what MAF do you recommend then?
