Thread: Tips on dropping in a motor ?

Alright, I have to go to a concert tonight, so I figured I'd throw this out there.

Any tips on dropping a motor into the car. Mine is being a PITA to line up I have the oil filter adapter off for more clearance. Although it is just me, I think if someone else was here it'd be easier, too bad all my friends are about as mechanically inclined as my dog.

But...even a dog can operate an engine hoist.

LOL Vinnie. I was going to suggest he use an engine hoist (aka cherry picker) instead of trying to drop it in. I can imagine getting a bolt started as the block slides by may be a bit challenging.









In all seriousness though, I pulled my engine and tranny out together and they will probably go back in that way, so Im not sure what to add. I would say, however, no matter how mechanically challenged your friends may be, if they can take orders, they would be of help as you could just have them move the engine around until you get it lined up and bolts started on the bell housing. But you are going to have to watch that lower motor mount as well as it Im sure its not going to want to line up properly without some coaxing.

If your dropping it in by yourself...it can be done. I did mine in about 30min....

lower it down, check for clearance. the hardest part was trying to get the flexplate around the converter.....

also. if your dropping the engine....watch your feet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

You don't have to disassemble the suspension by taking it out the top.

I changed the torque converter anyway.

Used to doing Honda motors, you don't even need a cherry picker

Good luck on dropping in the motor. I've got two to pull and drop back in starting tomorrow by myself too. Hoping it goes smoothly as well.

I believe Wolverine does make carbon fiber work boots as opposed to steel-toe, carbon fiber. Strong, light, and non-conductive to electricity or temperature.

Real. They're leather on the outside like a normal boot, but the protection part is carbon fiber with a kevlar blanket behind it, a lot lighter than your normal steel toe. (The kevlar is in case the carbon fiber breaks and shatters pieces into your foot IIRC)


Edit - Had soem good advie from Shimmy up here in Canukistan... Bolt the motor to the Tranny first and then the front mount goes in like a piece of cake :O

Ya getting the flex plate around the little nipple on the torque converter can hold ya up. I will put a floor jack under the transmission, towards the passengers side, and jack the transmission up on that side so the motor can get past that, and line up easier.

You have three points to hit/align that make it easy for me. On the block there are two little aligning pins pressed into the block that stick out, and will align with the transmission. The other point is the lower motor mount on the front of the block, to align that into the sub-frame. You aim for those, and it goes in like cake every time.
