The only other thing I can think of is possibly a rocker or lifter is lose or broken.

Just another idea. I would take off the valve covers and inspect them. Might get lucky there

Mines is making a similar noise. I just got done with an l67 engine swap from a 2004 impala ss engine + trans.

YouTube - L67 swap rough engine knock

    What could be the problem?

i've seen that on a few engines other than the 3.8. those were from double gasketing. where the old seal gets stuck on the oil filter housing. a chance that happening here? just curious.

I wouldnt even know. How would the seal being stuck cause it to make that noise?

the double gasket is weak. oil pressure overcomes the rubber, as you saw it sticking out in the picture, and causes a very fast oil leak. sounds like he spun a bearing.

check your torque converter bolts and make sure they are tight, while your down there check the flexplate and make sure it isnt broken. i broke a flexplate and it sounded just like this.
