    I need help. I have searched this site and nothing matches exactly what I have. This problem is making me nuts!

    The facts: 2001 GTP, stock, 153,000 miles, new alternator, new power steering pump, new pulleys 30k miles ago, new belts.

    When the car is cold, it sounds fine. After everything is up to temp (10-15 minutes of driving) i get a whining sound, like a belt or pulley. It is most pronounced at idle when hot. Above idle, engine noise starts to cover it up but it is still there. It does not get louder with increased rpm. It does it in park or any gear, stopped or moving. When I use the old screw-driver-to-the-ear method it seems to be loudest on any part of the supercharger, but I have little faith in that information.

    Here is the damnest part: It can be squealing like a pig, I shut the engine off and immediately start it back up, and the noise is GONE! After that the noise won't come back until I drive it for another 4 or 5 minutes. This makes running it without the belts kinda difficult, but now thinking about it, I suppose I could drive 4-5 minutes without the supercharger belt. Correct?

    I have heard every suggestion on the planet. Water pump, supercharger, and the last one was the PCV valve/housing gasket leaking and making noise. I need some opinions. Thanks in advance.

    yes take the SC belt off and see if the noise is still there. You wont hurt anything without the belt on .

    it could be the rack and pinion. even when the wheel is straight, i have more whining especially in this cold. i'm gonna replace it maybe this summer. that;s my bet. but of course, rule out the s/c. check ur idlers too.

    Here is a little update. Late last week we had a couple frigid days (-10 to 5 degrees). The noise never showed up on a drive that would have certainly caused it on a warmer day. As soon as the weather warmed up, the noise was back.

    I removed the supercharger belt, drove it for 10 minutes and the noise was back. So, it's not the supercharger. Maybe.

    Right after I took this first video, I shut the car off, and immediately restarted the engine. The sound is gone:

    I also decided to look further into this idea that the PCV valve was bad or the gasket was bad. I replaced the PCV valve the gasket and the O-ring. The gasket was pretty dry, but it didn't look like there was any leaking. I drove it to work this morning with no noise, but it was cold. The drive home should tell.

    Has anybody heard this noise before? I hope the quality is good enough for someone to have an idea...

    I have an update. I ran the car without the supercharger belt (what a dog) and the noise came back. That all but eliminated the blower, sort of.

    Still baffled, I took some video of the car with the noise and without. I tried posting those yesterday, and was told that my post would have to be approved by the Mods. I assumed my low post count and video links threw up a red flag. I also assume the Mods are busy guys with jobs and they didn't get to it. So if you really want to hear it, go to youtube and search for silo32.

    Then, I talked to a friend about this and mentioned the PCV valve. Crazy right? No. To make a long story short, I changed the PCV valve, the O-ring and the gasket on the cover plate and now for two days the noise is gone. I think what was happening was the cover plate gasket was leaking and the squealing/whining noise was actually a hissing sound. When you shut the car off the vacuum/pressure on the two sides of the PCV valve was "resetting" and the noise would go away until the pressure built back up.

    A couple months, a couple hundred bucks in parts and several years off of my life span, and it turned out to be fixed in less than 15 minutes for less than $10.
