Piced up a 1997 GTP for $200. Guy said they told him the timing chain slipped. It spins over like the plugs are out and backfires a bit. Do these engines have a chance of valves hitting the piston in this situation? I assume the chain can be replaced with enigine in car? Should I remove the SC snout to make it easier to get to and replace the coupler while at it?

yes, its an interference motor. the valves will hit the pistons if the chain breaks unless youre lucky as all hell.

the chain can be replaced with the engine in the car from the passenger fenderwell. you might have to drop the subframe a little bit to get the crank pulley off.

the coupler is most easily replaced by taking the blower off and disassembling that way.

that would work, but if the chain is broke its damn near a certainty that something is broke on the inside.
