Hey everyone, Ive got a 98 GTP with 89k miles on it. Took it up to the dealer to get a recall done on it. Had them check out a noise when the car is idling. They are telling me that the bearings are going bad. Is there a noticeable difference between the sound of bad bearings and the sound of just the coupler going bad. The sound happens at idle then when i hit the gas its still there until it gets into boost. I cant tell at that point if it just goes away or is just muted by the whine. Havent had time to take the belt off the s/c and try to spin it, will probably get to it tonight. Just wanted to find out if anyone knew of specific different sounds that would be made. It is like a metal on metal sound, could the rotors be hitting each other and scraping? I will probably just do a rebuild on the charger, but if its just the coupler then i will just do it. Thanks everyone

Also where can I find out more info on Branson this year? Is there a website?

the coupler will sound like tumbling rocks in the snout.

im not sure what bearings will sound like, but they wont be tumbling rocks.

I would be the coupler is bad. Simple and cheap to replace yourself.

And you are best to stay away from the dealer. Most places will rape you on price for work that you can do yourself.

I had to change mine because I notice a slight crackle when the supercharger was turning near red line. There was a little bit of play and the noise is now gone.

There is a very nice how to video on Youtube.

YouTube - Replacing a worn out supercharger coupler on 3.8 GM engines

Well anyways, I got mine from ZZP for a good price. Not sure about any other company. Good luck and I hope thats your problem

the poly coupler from ZZP is pretty nice. i would go through them if youre planning on buying a couple other parts to so that youre not paying $10 in shipping for something that weighs about half of a pound.

otherwise i would just get one from anywhere, they all work the same.
