Thread: Rockers break in

I changed my oil for the first time since the swap. I had been running dino oil for the first 500 miles and wanted to get back to Royal Purple. Anyway, on my magnetic drain plug there was a little material.

I would think some material is expected as the pushrods break in their new seats on the rockers. Just want to make sure this is normal and not something I should worry about. Thanks!

According to the instructions that came with the rockers there is. 250-500 miles.

you also basically have a whole new top to your motor, it's probably normal.

as soon as you start the motor they are pretty much worn in. there is nothing in this motor that you cant just beat on it pretty much right when you get done with putting it together.

besides, if you want the motor to run hard you have to break it in hard.

It's plenty broke in by now. I've made sure of that.

Figure everything needs to be broken in...that is why I took it WAY easy the first 1,000 miles or so...

Ill probably shatter my tranny the first day i get mine tuned

With my shift kit my tranny is doing great. WOT shifts are only 150-175ms.

thats easy with the m90.

mine will go straight through first gear, spin into second, and then grip. i dont really ever do it because i like my transmission the way it is..not broke.

With full timing I get a hell of a chirp for about a second. I don't know if that disqualifies it from being a chirp or not.

Earlier today I hit a slight bump at about 40MPH in a WOT run and got the wheels spinning until it upshifted. That was pretty cool.

3.29's own the tires...I spin though 1st and 2nd and grab 3rd LOL

I have personally never heard on breaking in rockers, but if the manufacture says that there is a break in period, then I guess there is.

If you feel that the metal shavings were in excess, then go ahead and throw in some more oil and a filter and run it for another 500 miles, and change the oil again.

if its clear, then go ahead and run the synthetic or royal and go on with life. if there is still some damage, it may be time to see if there isn't something more serious going on.

Lol, changing the oil in another 500 miles can get expensive. I just switched back to Royal Purple and that stuff gets more expensive every time I buy it. $8.57 a quart now. Another oil change is just too much.

I think it's fine. Most of that probably came from the minor imperfections in the newly machined seats on the rockers. The pushrods are a harder metal and they'll wear the seats to their shape.

Damn...move to Missouri...that stuff is only $6.99 a quart here
