I would love to see an a/a intercooler, but im not sure how you would make it out of phelonic, do yo uplan on amking it in a few pieces?

you could go and take the neck design off of the front of the fit plate and replicate it on the back, having both of the inlet an outlet facing forward.

drop the pipes towards the front and run the intercooler that way. it would be shorter than the fit setup on the ecotec engines.
    Engineering the impossible.

seriously, if i were to decide that this car was my project car then i would have at it. that is not that case because it is a FWD V6.

i am looking towards RWD and/or AWD with a turbo in the near future.

Reviving a really old thread here......

Did somebody actually make one of these? It's not something I would purchase now, but maybe in the future. I'm very interested to know if this was developed/built.

I think it's cool, but what would be the benefits from A2A over W2A? would it be cheaper or more efficient?

cheaper? probably, air to air intercoolers are cheap.

more effective? nope. water to air is more effective.

you'd also have major tuning problems and would be forced to tune speed density with no MAF.

They've been made, I've seen a few photo's of them, but I dont know tons of info on them. But I belive they are all produced in Australia. It would not be worth the time to mess with one. By the time you get one into the states I'm going to guess it'd be cheaper to buy a full size water to air intercooler and you'd see much greater gains. That's not counting the custom work you'd have to do rework the air to air system to make it work on a w-body.

Edit, Holy Crap I'm blind just noticed this was a 3 page thread. Everything I've already covered has been said in the two other pages I just noticed. haha

With that being said, more power to you if your all about building your own set up. But I dont see much point in it when the intercoolers that you can buy now are great to start with.

I know that this was built in Australia, but I was wondering if the GPF member had produced his own.

For me, the single loop system offers advantages, or peace of mind if you will, because if the W2A unit leaks it will kill your engine. Throw a big enough FMIC on the car and the intake charge will be at near ambient temps.

Lag would be a disadvantage as everybody has mentioned, but it shouldn't be nearly as bad as a turbo.

If your worryed about a leak or a failed intercooler pump why not look into a aeroforce scan gauge? That'd be a hell fire way to keep tab's on knock. If you see a large jump in knock at wot. (IMO any knock) then it's pretty much a no doubt issue that somthing is going on with that car that shouldnt be. Let it be a failed i\c system or some one put cheap gas in the car.

If the manifold mounted heat exchanger bursts/breaks/etc and pisses its fluid into the intake, how would the gauge help?

Right, because that happens all the time. If something makes it past the filter, into the t.b, around and around in the blower and then comes out of the blower with such amazing force that even chuck Norris won't stand a chance and destroys your intercooler which then allows half a gallon of water or coolant into your intake it'd be screwed. I think at that point more then enough hell has rained down on to the car that worrying about having a dicked short block as well is not such a big deal. Ive yet to see a damaged ic core in the last 8 years I've been around, so I find this not likely to happen, but I'd like to be proved wrong. So you can tell me Im a retard.

Well, I don't agree with throwing the word "retard" around.

Have you ever heard of thermal stress? Nobody is worried about the intake sucking in a pigeon and blowing up the engine, by the way. Where I live, the temperature is -26C right now. That presents a huge thermal gradient when the engine begins warming up. That accounts for most of my concern when running the W2A units. It sounds as though most people have excellent reliability with W2A, so there should be nothing to worry about.

    Happy intercooling.

Exactly. It would be like driving the car into a lake and checking the scan gauge as the engine is going underwater.

If you are going to take the time to make an air to air for the m90, just turbo the *****.
