HELP! I'mbrand new to the forum and I see a lot of intelligent folks are here so I hope you can bail me out. I have a 1997 GTP. I had the infamous upper and lower intake gasket leaks and didn't catch it soon enough so I also had head gasket issues. I replaced the head gaskets and both upper and lower intake gaskets. Now that it's all back together, I have a loud "whooshing sound all the time. I've renewed the supercharger oil and that didn't help. I have removed the belts and the sound is still there and about the same volume. I've cheked and rechecked all my vacuum lines and even replaced the exhaust crossover donut and rear exhaust manifold to exhaust system studs and gasket. Nothing has changed the sound. Any suggestions?

maybe it's the sound of the supercharger pushing air?

could it make the sound even if the water pump is not spinning? It is a constant sound with or without any belts attached

with out hearing it running, any advice is nothing more then a blind guess.

both belts off does eliminate the front of the engine.

I agree. It sounds like the noise is coming from the rear (driver's side) of the engine by the throttle body and rear exhaust manifold. I've checked the air box and actually took it apart and reseated it and that got me nowhere.

sounds like it could be the egr. might be an exhaust leak, in which case, you should be able to feel air coming out of the leak location, or it could be a vacuum leak, and spraying starting fluid at the area where the leak is will change the sound of the idle for a brief time.

like scott said, all we are doing is guessing.

I agree that you're only guessing and I do appreciate the fact that you're willing to give me some input. One thing that I didn't mention and I'm not sure it matters but when I start it even with the belts off the supercharger is still spinning and it's spinning hard enough that it is hard to stop even holding the pulley with a belt.

sc spins belt off, its sucking air past it so it can run.

Unplug the maf see if it's still doing it. Could be a bad maf or even a bad IAC, sounds to me like the intake is sucking in more air than usual. Mine will do it when I first start the car and then settle down after a min or 2. Could be a vacuum leak as mentioned above, I use rtv instead of throttle body and supercharger gaskets to prevent leaks.

Got it! Thanks for directing me toward the egr valve. The flex pipe had a crack in it. Replaced and noise is gone.
