My car is overheating and it has done this a few times. It seems like coolant isnt getting cycled through the system. Steam or smoke comes from the top of the radiator on the driver side near the rubber tube. I can open the radiator cap and have nothing come out that way but when i put water in, the radiator makes a small pop noise and spits coolant out. The temp meter will go up and down but will eventually stay at the top and sometimes go past the highest point. I really need to figure out whats going on, this is my only means of transportation

check that the upper and lower rad hoses are getting hot. could be a bad T stat.

or it could be a blown head gasket, rare, but it happens sometimes, just how hot has it gotten on you?

    that hot.

you may want to rent a compression tester and test the cylinders out. if one is low its head gasket.

just to be clear, its loosing coolant, but not on the ground right?

Coolant is leaking on the ground but only drips at a time, I plan on checking the whole coolant system after i get out of class. could a t stat stop the flow of coolant ?

if its locked up yes, sometimes they are defective or fail, they fail open, and closed.

if its leaking, from where about? if its by the rad the side of the rad could be cracked, or a hose is leaking, then theres the good old coolant elbows, water pump and heater hoses are common leaks.

they rent/sell a cooling system pressure tester as well, it pumps up the system and forces it to leak.

I also think that it most likely is the t stat and the pressure inside the top rad hose has cause a hole in itself.

dont be "that guy" lol get to it......bundle up and get looking.

the pressure tester, you put it on the rad cap pump it up to say 19 psi and walk away, then come back to see if its held pressure, if it went down then you start to look for the forced leak.

There's another item in the system. The radiator cap. It's supposed to bleed off pressure and allow coolant back in. They can also go bad.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

I think i might have to call myself a dumb A** !!! It might be low to none antifreeze in my radiator. I have been driving it two days now and it was overheating. Yesterday i replaced the tstat hoping that would solve my problems. It seemed like it did when i took it for a test drive after fixing it. Later that night it overheated on the way out with friends, i had to stray off and go home Im a teenager .... thats no excuse but just a foolish mistake of me ...
