I need to change out my powersteering pump.

Want to know if it is as hard as it looks to change the power steering pump. It seems like it is leaking from the bearing. I used Lukas power steering stop leak a couple of time but I think I am running out of luck. In the winter it is very loud. I have to top it up about every month, but in the winter I have to top it up once a week. Thanks.

check that the lines are not leaking first. or the rack.

if its the pump, you'll want to take the front tire off, then take the lines off the pump from the wheel well. put a pan under it as its going to leak fluid out of the pump.

then take the alt off, and the over flow tank if you have one there. now theres a hole in the p/s pulley, you use a 13 mm and a 3 inch extension through that hole. there are 2 bolts @ the 12 and 6 o clock areas.

once the pump is off, you need a Gm p/s pulley puller, they cost a bout 30 bucks, or use the free rental deal at your local parts store. nothing else will take this pulley off with out damaging it.

this puller also puts the pulley back on the new pump.

with all this being said, its not that hard really, it may take a hour or so if your taking your time.

it's fairly simple. Also while you are in there you can completely remove the alternator bracket (if not 97) and replace your coolant elbows. It will give you plenty of clearance to get to the pump and the elbows are maintenance if you haven't changed them yet. Just a thought. If you have a 97, disregard what I just said.. LOL Also I found it easier to just use a deep well 13mm 3/8 drive without an extension and bending over the fender to get the bolts out... Either way, it's really an easy job. Just the lines are annoying to me.

if you got a 97 or 98 you can still pull that alt bracket and change the O ring on the cast elbow, and change the upper elbow, if you want, its not in the way whats so ever, nor is it any easier to with the pump off.

changing the elbows at this time would be purely for piece of mind.

My trans dipstick tube has been rubbing against my ps lines and it rubbed a whole in it so we welded the whole up but still has a tiny leak so I have to keep a check on it,the metal lines are the hardest ever to fix and I can't find replacements
