You may already know, but I just got the same filter my truck takes. 4.3l 1998
GMC 1500. It's like an inch or more longer. And a warning goes with that... If your hydraulic motor mount pops and you have that longer filter, it will hit the subframe and put a hole in filter fairly quickly. I ran solid rubber mounts for engine and trans so I didn't have to worry.
just keep changing it at 3,000 filter wont matter so much, the oil is dark its not like stuff is floating in it. its still filtered, just got all that burn oil residue in it now.
my oil used to be black with in a 1000 miles after a oil change, the rockers were black as night, slowly they are cleaning up and my oil stays golden longer now, im at about 1000 miles in on my last oil change, its still golden looking.
im the 9 th owner of my car, it was neglected by the last few owners for sure.
PL24011 pureone and penzoil platinum 5w30 are my current poisons.

Castrol synthetic because I like John Force. Mobile 1 if I need to do a change and Castrol is not on sale.
Filters I like PureOne, Wix, Bosch, K&N, Mobile 1.
Wow, take it straight from the company. Even Valvoline suggest that you go to Walmart to get your oil since they have the most reasonable prices.
As far as every auto parts store is concerned, it's on sale 100% of the time. Their sale piece just matches walmart's normal price. Saving $7 on top of that is just "stupid cheap".
*swear. *brain. *work. *feel. *to.
