Thread: Loss of power, idles fine

2003.
Changed the plugs, wires, and the fuel filter. Still the same. Very doggy. Engine will not rev over 3k, but it runs with no hick-ups at idle. Wire orientation is correct, plugs are gapped. Pulled the FPR out, screen was clean, 50psi of fuel pressure. Getting detonation at higher RPMs.
Intake gasket? Ignition module?

Different story then.
Car came to me with the empty light on, then it went to full, then 3/4. Keeps jumping around.

Fueling issue? Know the history on the Fuel Pump? When was the last time it was replaced? Try bypassing the Fuel Pump and making it run on 'high mode'.

Well the pump is getting the fuel up there at 50psi So the fuel pump does work. The clogged cat sounds like a good bet, just replaced the mufflers, and had one of the mufflers was off when I had to move it outside. The car was extremely quiet, that did have me wonder a bit.
The plugs were autolite platinum. No codes, I will try unplugging the MAF.

What kind of plugs did you put in? Barring that I would go with a clogged cat as mentioned. Classic sign of not being able to pull over 3K rpms.

Rico- speed density mode?? You mean unplug the MAF, or something else?

yea, i would definitly say the cat, cause my friends taurus acted excactly the same, ran fine, but once he hit 3-4k, it would kick back when he let go of the throttle, and serious power loss. i hammered it lightly, and sea-foamed it, and it helped quite a bit. but im not sure if the hammer thing is exactly a good idea... especially if ur exaust is old.

To elaborate on what FFDP stated above, yes, these cars do not like platinum plugs at all. Get those out and get some copper or irridium plugs in it. Autolite, AC Delco, or NGK. I run the NGK TR55's in my GT and it runs just fine. The ignition system type on these cars will tear up platinum plugs in a hurry due to the waste-spark setup. I've heard of plats causing issues in as little as 100miles.

I like to put in what I take out, so that's why I grabbed them. Went and switched them out to Delco plugs and it started doing the same crap. Pulled out the o2 sensor and it was a little peppier. Then went ahead as to unbolt the cat from the resonator, sure enough, still quiet. Unbolted the cat and the other o2. Cut the end of the pipe off to find the porcelain inside brown and fuuulll of junk.

I think we have a clogged cat here guys. Good guess. I have one coming tomorrow, so when that comes, weld it in and hope for the best.
