Well I have decided to replace my engine. All the junkyards want like 700. How much would it cost to rebuild the one I have? It has rod knock and would want to do it right. I have never rebuilt one before so links or books would be helpful.

What's causing the rod knock? Does it have a bent rod? If so what caused that rod to bend?

Generally if something internal goes bad, something else caused it to do so...

Check craigslist for a used engine. Any Series II 3800 will work. Grand Prix, Monte Carlo, Impala, Regal, Bonneville, etc.. Just re-use your accessories if needed. I picked mine up for $350 out of a wrecked 01 GT. Runs like a champ!

And in order to have yours rebuilt properly, you will spend more than the $700 the JY priced a motor for. Especially since you will have to buy all new pistons/rings, bearings for everything, and possibly a crank if yours is shot. That's assuming that the heads are good and the block is good as well. It all adds up rather quick.

Just grab a good longblock and go from there. All in all I spent about $650 total on mine and that was with replacing the entire UIM, new LIM gaskets, oil pan gaskets, etc while it was out.

Here is some ads from the KC area Craigslist I just pulled. Not sure what part of KC you are in, but if it's cheap enough a small drive could be worth it.

Yes. Same longblock though. Just swap over your LIM/UIM and other parts/brackets and on you go. You will also want to install your current knock sensors IIRC, as they can differ. I'm sure Bill or someone can clarify if this is necessary.

Only thing important about knock sensors is thread sealant paste and the correct TQ. Specs.

Change the oil pan/pickup tube gasket. Allows you to clean the pickup out really well. Change valve covers AND grommets. Injector o-rings, install the updated Aluminum LIM gaskets, new UIM gasket.

I would leave the timing cover and front main alone. Only the rear plate seal comes to mind here as they have been known to leak.

Clean the entire motor up real good before you install it. Oh, and if you have any steering issues currently (like a leaking PS line or bad rack) NOW would be the time to replace that as well once the motor is out. So much more room than w/ it in place.

How's your motor and trans. mounts look? Might do them as well.
