Hey guys, figured I would start a new thread on this one specific problem I discovered tonight. I am having a chuging or stumble on hot starts only, and got looking for Vac leaks tonight. I was inspecting the TB, and noticed that there is a small Gap between the TB and Plenum. Stethoscope confirmed my suspecion of a leak. I dont know if the previous owner had the TB off at one point in time and did not get it seated back on properly, or if the Plenum its self is actually warped.

What is between the plenum and TB for a gasket? is it a paper gasket or an o-ring? Much work to pull the TB?

Heres the pics I took with my BlackBerry.

Throttle body is 3 bolts. Get a new gasket for it, IIRC l36 uses a paper gasket also.

I'd say the bracket from the side of the TB is likely missing. Usually people dont' have trouble once it's gone..but it's there from the factory and it's a pain to work around so most guys don't put it back on. It spans from down on the LIM to the TB by the TPS sensor.

The TB gasket is nylon/rubber. It fits into a groove built into the UIM. If the TB has been removed before and the gasket not changed then that is your issue.

Did you try sparying carb cleaner around the TB to see if it was an actual vac leak? The suction noise your stehoscope may be picking up could just be the normal sound of the intake sucking in air through the TB.

The IAC routing in the TB was NOT designed for being quiet. looks like it was designed for being really cheap.

I picked up a TB gasket today from the Dealership...$24 bucks my cost. I would throw it on right now but the GF has the car in London right now. Wont get around to it till tomorrow night at the earliest. Im almost positive its leaking, but I will spray some carb cleaner in that area to see if it will confirm the leak.

Overall it's pretty common and usually a fresh gasket helps it.

Does your TB have a bracket to the LIM holding it up?
