What exactly does an HV3 do? I know you place it in your UIM, and you get some power increase. Ive read that you can get them from ZZP, but Ive heard ZZP sucks, so where would be a good place to get one? Would I need to tune my PCM if I get an HV3? Does the HV3 work with the revised Dorman UIM?

Dunno why you've heard ZZP sucks, because they're the guys who developed this helpful part, along with many others for 3800's. It's their own item, and therefore they are the only original supplier.

HV3's work great in L36/L26 upper intakes, to remove the restriction of the stock baffling cage, and increase LIM runner length for more top-end HP. You can read the old documentation on easyperformance.com (ZZP's sub-company where 2-3 of their guys developed many of the popular items used in our market, from AFC's to ZZP's fuel rails). The HV2 (H.V.I.I.) was improved upon, to develop the HV3, and not lose any low end torque with this item.

We have one in the UIM of the 11sec turbo Regal I built for a local, and it was previously installed in the UIM of an N/A Monte SS. In the Monte, we did a 1hr install, and pulled right back out of my shop. Instantly, he felt the power gains over the stock internals, and with a mild tune to clean up the pcm basics, he was very content with the setup... until we top-swapped it, and he jumped into a new world of fun this year.

There's a lot of people who like to spread the word here that zzp is crap. What they don't realize is 90% of the 3800 aftermarket parts is created or influenced by them in a way. The more they sell, the more they develop and refine these parts. The other vendors are down to maybe 1-2 people filling these orders and have other jobs, no real product research or development. Community vendors are a different category, so what i dont understand is why everyone *****es about them? Things could be way worse...

This makes zero sense. Wouldn't it shorten the intake runners? The piece you remove is an extension of the intake runner which makes them VERY long runners. Long runners are better for mid and low end power but piss poor for high end power. The shorter runners are better for high end power.

ZZP found the right length and shape to maintain low end power and increase high end power.

Right from the horse's mouth (EP describing ZZP's HV insert during the original development):
"Their solution increases the lower intake manifold runners by an additional 1/2". This insert also has the entrances to each runner rounded to improve entrance flows into each runner."

Yes, the stock runner cage was supposed to be a faux-extension for the runners, that provided minimal low-end help, but anyone who's driven an N/A car before & after installing an HV3 (or even HVII), knows there's plenty gained overall.

For those who haven't looked, here's their results in early 2003 from the testing on a GP GT with minimal mods:

    Stock UIM dyno chart
    HV Insert dyno chart

Even the torque numbers improve when removing the restrictive stock runners, shifting peak 200rpm higher wit a 2ft-lb gain, and remaining 25ft-lbs higher at redline. Not to mention the peak and redline HP gains.

I've even heard that removing the cage alone, will start you on the path to these gains (possible proof in old CGP threads). The HV insert would then reduce the turbulence, add a little runner length, and smoothly direct air to the ports. I plan on monitoring airflow gains from this with another local's L36 I've started tuning, while they save up for an HV3 to install.

The total intake runner length includes the intake runners in the heads, lower intake manifold and the upper intake manifold.

You remove the excessively long ones in the upper intake manifold and replace them with the shorter piece of the HV3. You even said that yourself so the way ZZP is explaining it is correct, but they should be saying the intake runner length is being decreased.

If you're gonna concentrate on that poor initial description I gave, enjoy. The focus of this should be on the fact that the HV3 works, and works well, so that people asking for experiences can have something to reference.

Thanks Dave... That was the greatest defense of all time. I asked a simple question poking at the logic behind the HV3 and you say "stop nit picking".

Ever hear of science? I think we should have more science around here than "OH IT FELT GOOD, DO IT AGAIN."

But that hurts peoples feelings :C

Focus should be spread across what it does, and why it does it. You should learn about how a car works before you begin to modify it.

I said my wording/logic/whatever was poor in my 1st reply.

Then I gave actual data, including the manufacturer's dyno comparisons from their original testing. Can't get too much more scientific than the EasyPerformance page that I urged people to check out, as well.

When you've taken 3800's faster than I have, I'll stop (that was plural for a reason, btw).

If you guys actually paid attention to the description, it tells you that it lengthens the LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD runners about a half inch to an open plenum design. Yes you remove the UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD runner extentions for the hv3. The upper intake runner extensions are longer than the hv3 an inhibit high rpm performance.

Lol.. All these replies, and very few straight answers.

#1 Lets your engine breath better at high RPMs
#2 In my experience the HV3 is a high quality product, it is designed well and fits like a glove. And if you want a new one, ZZP is the only place.
#3 You don’t need a PCM tune, although higher shift points compliment this mod.
#4 Sorry, I have no idea.

I have run with an HV3 for like 6 months now. I’m very happy with it, the change is most noticeable while passing people at highway speeds. It is definitely the best mod I have done to my engine.

Ten years of continuous driving excitement and counting!

Despite the fact that the car they used for the test had rockers and then continues to claim the part will add 30 HP by itself.

Sorry, it kinda is in the details.
