So late last night during a heavy rain storm my wife drove to the store and didn't see that the road was flooded until it was too late she ended up in about 2ft of water she attempted to power thru but ended up stalling in the water, insurance towed the car home and today I went out to check it out. All power in the car works and all accessories work (no water can into cabin) I pulled the air filter and it was drenched I looked in throttle body and there is moisture present. The car cranks and fires for a second but quickly dies. Is this car savable? Is there anything I can do to keep the insurance company from calling it a total loss ? I know I will be upside down if they do I owe 5800 on the car it is an 04 gt2 with 93k leather and heated seats I doubt it's worth more than 4k

    1. You got hosed on that car.
    2. Pull the plugs and clear the water from the cylinders.

Car cranked up today blew smoke for about 20 seconds then smoothed out smoke went away and runs just as good as it ever did. I'm going to drain the oil and change filter for prevention purposes. Still no sign of water in the oil but can't be too safe.

I know I got hosed on it, I inherited the loan on it from my dad. Over the years he bought and traded car after car after car on the same loan never paying the previous car off. The car was purchased at 3999 with the rest being negative equity. Still screws me if the insurance company trys to give me 4k in a 100 mile radius I have found identical year and mileage ranging from 4999 to 5999 but thats retail. If they try to total it out I think I'm going to opt out if that's possible.

Well, it seems like you saved the engine. Probably nice and clean on the inside now since the water took some carbon with it.

Why worry. She runs don't she? Take it to the nearest blackest car detailer and have them shine her up and go about your business. No insurance needed.

Well my paranoia got the best of me and I decided to check the oil with the car running just to be sure and I found the oil has changed colors to a milky brown. I shut the car down immediately and upon pulling the oil cap found moisture and the same color oil. Think a drain and fill run 40 miles then drain an refill with a new filter will remedy this?

If you suspect you got water in the oil then I'd change it asap. Change the filter using a cheaper one (not Fram) and some cheap oil, run it for a few miles (not 40) then change it again with a quality filter and oil and recheck. Likely the motor will survive since you caught it soon enough.

Insurance adjuster recommend the same and there was no settlement (thank God) the car has to sit till Friday then I can get it done. The amount of water is so little it didn't even move the oil off the full mark just gave it a slight milky color. The car has not been ran more than 3 minutes total since the accident and won't be started again till Friday when I can get the oil changed. Thank you guys
