So I have an extra gt trans laying around with the 3.29 gearing and 7/8 chain. I was wondering what machining would have to be done to use the gears, I would just buy a new chain set to go along with it. Pics would be nice if already done before.

Hi Tim
Ok how about we start with asking... what exactly do you want to do with parts from this non-hd 4t65e transmission? Kinda important.
Ohh god umm have you looked at a set of 7/8s gears vs stock? Stock uses a dual chain setup and as far as I know you cant put a 7/8s chain on stock gears. You need gears and 7/8s chain like the setup from Triple Edge Performance if your trying to run 7/8s setup.
Zero machining needs to be done but you need new channel plate gaskets once you take the valve body and channel plate off to expose the chain and gears. This can all be done in the car if you lower the cradle enough to get the side cover off. Also while you in there might as well replace the 4th gear clutch pack.
Have fun the 4th gear clutch pack and channel plate is kind of a fvcker to line up with the channel plate gaskets when doing this in the car........
Save yourself a lot of time and leave the "GT" transmission together and just swap the differential. That's the only meaningful difference between the two transmissions. HD transmission has the HD differential. Other then that they are exactly the same.
Just don't forget to put the park pawl torrington bearing back into place. It falls out almost every time. It will make you super sad when you snap the differential cover to pieces.
Lol. I wish they came with a 7/8ths chain stock. The only upgraded chainset that came in ANY 4t65e is the hardened chain from a gxp. Pretty much is the only oem chain you can buy nowadays.
ALL stock ones are dual chain setup not 7/8s lol cmon man. you need to take a look around on the

INTENSE™ Gear Ratio Conversion Kits use 3/4" spur gear sprockets, instead of the stock 180 degree offset double chain and gears. Each Gear Ratio Conversion Kit includes the appropriate drive sprocket, drive sprocket thrust washer, driven sprocket, 7/8" drive chain, and all the machining required to make these gears fit your otherwise stock 4T65E or 4T65E-HD transaxle. Optionally, you can add the accessory kit which includes channel plate gaskets, valve body spacer/gasket and fluid scoop.
For the 1997 model year, GM switched to an offset double drive chain design in an effort to reduce noise. The offset double drive chain has two sets of links out of phase by a half link (or 180 degrees). As one link starts to engage a sprocket tooth, another link starts to disengage. The engage and disengage noises are acoustically opposite, so they virtually cancel each other out. INTENSE™ Transaxles use 3/4" spur gear sprockets with a 7/8" chain (same as in this gear ratio conversion kit), instead of the stock 180 degree offset double chain and gears. Because of this, our transaxles have a barely perceptible whine in First and Reverse, but a major weak link is eliminated. Our gear conversion kits come with a new ISS reluctor wheel already attached to the drive gear by loc-tite'd screws replacing the stock rivets that could break or enlongate the ISS reluctor wheel holes.
NONE are 7/8s stock.
No, they didn't come stock with a 7/8ths chain... they were all a dual chain setup.. and if that's a 97 GT trans is a 4t60 and you might as well just scrap it.
