I always just used a crowbar and a quick yank popped it out.
If that fails get under from the passenger side, with a pipe, or something long you cant hit the piss out of, and put that on the axle and one quick pop with a hammer does it.

As bill said, constant pulling isn't going to get it out easy. You need a quick and sharp force to compress the ring and let it come out. I use a pry bar like this:
Works quite well most of the time.
Zef.. I got a 100%, easy every time solution.
Great deal on GearWrench 82248 at ToolTopia.com
This bad larry is the end all be all pry bar from what I've found. Took it up to my buddies shop (full time mechanic who has his own place) and he wanted to buy it after we did a motor swap.
you need to put a pry bar behind the cv shaft where it goes into the trans, and with your foot give it a sharp kick and pull it at the same time, its needs to be popped or it wont come out, a straight pull on it wont work.
