Hey guys, i recently got my car bac on the road after rebuilding the motor, and having the trans rebuilt. however after 115 miles im having trans issues. It is under warranty but i just wondered if anyone had any input on this, transmissions arent my strong suit. for the first 100 miles everything was good, the trasn was rebuilt, zzp shift kit, new clutches, new torque conv., etc. filled it with royal purple max atf trans fluid, and yesterday on the way home i noticed that i had lost power, engine kept revving but my speed kept dropping so i rolled it into a parking lot, i had no reverse, and no forward gears at all. shut it off let it sit for about 30 mins, restarted it and i had reverse, and all forward gears were fine, drove it another 3 miles to my house and as i pulled in the subdivision same thing, no gears again. checked the fluid, and looks like mud. Ive heard the trans cooler can break and mix with the antifreeze but im not entirely sure if it would cause something like this. any input would be appreciated. thanks everyone

why even bother trying to diagnose it if u have warranty on it still?...just take it back to shop that did the rebuild and they'll be able to tell ya.

Its loosing all the gears because with whatever failed inside the tranny, The muddy fluid clogs the filter and it can't keep the pressure up. You're going to need another tranny.

if something would have broke inside wouldnt it cause it to never have gears though? i got in it again this morning, drove it around my subdivision twice, which right around 3 miles before it lost gears again. dropped the trans pan, and it looks like there might be coolant in the fluid? its a dark and light brown mix, and there is a ton of clutch material in the pan, and around the filter, and metal lines inside the pan

If it is coolant in the trans. You might be out of luck becuase I'm almost posittive that's not under warrenty.

yea the guy that built it is pretty cool though, because i mean really there is no way to tell beforehand that the trans cooler is leaking, so we decided to get an external cooler, flush the system, throw in a couple filters until everything runs clear, and see what happens from there. as long as i remove it, and reinstall hes gonna build it again for me which is awesome

I'm in agreement, something is probably clogging the filter. No fluid, no movement.

As for the mud, is it dark brown type mud? That's clutch material. Water in the trans fluid (oil) would appear milky reddish. FWIW typically you will get trans fluid into the coolant and not coolant into the trans fluid. This is because the trans fluid is pressurized higher than the radiator.

Likely a seal is not quite right and that caused some slippage and the clutches to wear quick, build up in the pan and starve the trans.

yeah the mud iteself is real dark brown, but the fluid looks like chocolate milk, no reddish tint at all in it.

Sounds like mine... I had a cracked filter neck and it would do the same thing. It tore up my 5-6k mile old tranny and ended up replacing it. I personally wouldn't waste the money on fluid and a fliter cause even if it does work for a while the trans life is probably way way shortened. I replaced my filter and fluid and cleaned all the mud/metal out of the pan filled it back with new fluid and it went a couple weeks and lost 2nd gear then about 3 weeks and it lost 4th gear. My $102.50 4t65e-hd from pullapart is still going strong...

update: today i bought an external cooler, and some new fluid. installed the cooler, ran the return line to it, and put the pressure line into a garbage can. started it up, and when it started to pump fluid out the press. line i kept feeding it with new fluid, after about 2 minutes the milky brown crap that was in it, started to flow a decent red color, so i shut it down, hooked up the pressure line to the cooler, topped it off and drove it. no more lost gears after the ~3 miles, but under 1/2 - 3/4 acceleration from a stop the car shudders, i let off get back in it and its fine. and on a hard run through first gear it slipped right at the shift point, then slammed into 2nd. shifts fine under normal acceleration/take offs. also theres a clunk, audible, and you can feel it when the car goes into reverse, or when you manually downshift it through the gears. any suggestions? and as far as the mixed fluid, it didnt mix with any coolant thank god. any ideas on what could cause the clunk, slippign under launches? i ran it with my 18 inch rims, with 225/50/18 tires on it, and it would not break them loose. am i wrong or should it not break that size or a tire loose? any input would be appreciated thanks guys
