Thread: which shift kit?

I have a TransGo kit in my fully built Triple Edge transmission...It shifts harder than sin...I love it. I used to have a ZZP shift kit in my stock transmission and there are WORLDS difference here...granted...it is fully built...but I hardly even noticed much of a difference with my ZZP one vs. stock.

This tells the tale... If you didn't notice a difference you either installed it wrong or on the lightest setting. Likewise there might have been another issue with the transmission that was resolved when it was rebuilt.

Nonetheless, a trans rebuild (done properly) is always going to net better results than a shift kit. There are many other components in the transmission that are being tweaked when a rebuild is done which you would never touch when installing a shift kit. Likewise there are components that your changing when you're installing a shift kit versus tuning a line pressure increase and shortening shift time which is why I find it a little odd when people try to draw parallel lines between a shift kit and a tune. One is a physical change while the other is simply a variable change.

I was honestly disappointed with their kit...I tested it on the "strongest" setting. I'm not saying their wasn't a difference...I just didn't get the slapbang shifts like I thought I was going to be getting...

The tune however was a base DHP V1.0 file...so the line pressure was increased there.

The transmission was fine...I never had any issues with it whatsoever...I just upgraded to a Triple Edge Street/Strip Transmission when I had the funds that way I didn't have to worry about it in the future as a weak link.

I bet you almost anything you were bleeding pressure off somewhere else then or they sent you the wrong sized shims. Either that or you installed them wrong and trust me, many people have done that (myself included!).

If the proper sized shims are used and installed correctly, the shift is obnoxiously hard.

Honestly, this is one of my beefs with the Intense/ ZZP kits. I'm of the opinion that the strongest setting shouldn't even be offered because it has a tendency to put extra stress on the input shaft, especially when combined with a PCM that has increased line pressure. It's reasons like this you need to be a little cautious when shopping with Intense. Their website is (IMO) a freezeframe of how people used to do things in 2004, right down to the limited slip differentials.

Your last statement is why I dislike all the poor results from reading all of their tech articles that, like you said...have been there since '05 or older...I for once would like a vendor site, maybe even your own...that had some sort of a detailed guide to make smarter decisions...for those individuals that DON'T tend to research things...for example...that follow ZZP's recommendations and have a 180*, colder plugs, and a catback...and think they have enough room to drop to a 3.4"...like my Safely Modding Thread. Just so we have less misinformed guys out there...or who are making safer decisions on their cars...

Fair enough on the shift kit response though; but honestly I couldn't tell you. I bought it when I bought with my cam and headers so I hadn't done anything internal wise yet...I had the gasket install kit and everything from ZZP in a pretty decently sized box...and my shift kit was in a roll of plastic wrap with some half head instructions that irritated me for the most part. I had never done anything transmission replated prior to that install so I was happy that it still worked LOL

Do you guys kits come with springs too?i heard all it comes with is shims or spacers. and do you still sell it in 2 versions, medium or hard?

I have the WBS shift kit. I have had it for about three or four years now. It has been working just fine. I had him order the spring for me when I did mine.

We used to offer the springs as options but I don't think we have in a few years. We just offer the medium setting because the hard setting is un-necessarily hard (IMO) and will result in added stress to the hard parts. Likewise, there's no real advantage to it as these transmissions don't generally see a lot of clutch failures to begin with.
