Hello, i have a 98 GP GTP - my transmission went out completely. it doesnt go in drive, reverse, nothing...

Anyways, i found a trans from a 2001 GP GTP, low milage, and was wondering about the trans lines and range sensor.

i figure trans lines runs from trans different, diff. fittings? or different angle/path?? but hook up to radiator same way... but where is the range sensor located ??? does n e one have a picture, or general knowledge of its location ??? what is involved with hooking up an external range sensor as opposed to internal???

Oh, also what is the big deal about cooling line fittings and check balls???
do i use my 2001 trans lines/fittings/checkballs or do i keep my 98 trans stuff???

i got these from other posts:

you may or may not need the external range sensor...if you do it's a quick easy install.

You MUST USE A FITTING WITH A CHECKBALL IF THE TRANS CAME WITH ONE!!!! The ONLY exception to this is if the transmission is apart and being rebuilt you can install an internal checkball like what was used on the 97-99 and 04+ units. It is in the channel plate. It doesnt matter where it is located but there has to be one in one spot or another.

The external range switch is no problem and the 01 GTP trans uses this also so if it is not on the trans you got then simply swap over the one from your existing transmission. The switch is bolted to the trans case just below the shift lever and is black in color and has two electrical connectors on it.

For cooler lines you will either have to use the quick connect lines that match the trans OR get the correct thread-in type feed fitting to work in the 01 case and you can use your existing return line fitting from your 98 case. There is a cooler fitting thread that is stickied at the top of the trans section that explains the differences.

what quick connect lines match the trans?
    - pics?

i read the sticky... seems like more work than i bargain for?

if i could just use quick connects thats fine for me.
    - pics?

i read that they may leak sometimes or in the future, but im just using car as daily driver, so i will watch for leaks, no High Performance use for me...

so if i have both cooler lines from both cars, will i have what i need???

do i have to worry about check balls??? - im picking up trans tomorrow......

Your 01 trans will have quick connect fittings and you can leave these in the trans if you have matching lines. One problem you may run into is that around 98/99 the radiator fitting also switched from threaded style to quick connect and if your 98 radiator does NOT have quick connect fittings then you will need to get these, they will thread right into your radiator if it requires this. Napa sells these fittings if you need them.

you can get it repaired by an expert mechanic and again find it working in proper way. If a mechanic cant help you, you should get upgraded with a new one on your car.
