OK, so what I think I hear is that it's normal for only the splines to be hardened.
I also think I hear that I can order a normal 4th gear clutch hub for a 03/04 grand prix and get a hardened one that way. Not that it would be any less expensive, but that would probably work, wouldn't it?
Only the small splined end is what is heat treated, the rest of the shaft has a bare machined finish while the splines will be dark blue/black in color. I dont believe you can buy a non hardened one at all from GM and the number will have a replacement number for the newer part in the parts counter system so even if you order one for a 97 trans it will be the hardened part.
