What part of Iowa are you in? I'm in eastern nebraska and tune these cars.
Im located in Cedar Rapids Iowa
It'd be worth the drive; honestly.
That's about 5 hours from me according to google.
You guys think it would be worth it just to have the basics tuned on a stock car? I have no doubt there are benefits to an "in car" tune, but it seems like a lot of time and gas for just tuning the basics. Im sure you guys will sway my opinion though
I'd say it will NEED...
Some sort of intake; at LEAST a u-bend delete (if not a downpipe), and a 180* Thermostat.
Those plus an in-car tune...worth it just for the transmission and cooling settings, alone.
Your car is completely stock at the moment?
Yes sir, not even a open cone filter.
Honestly, for a stock car, I don't think it's worth it. It won't be any faster. It'll drive different due to the trans tune and a few other tricks. But, I would highly recommend doing a few mods before you drive this far.
That's all I'm really looking for. This car will most likely be stock the rest of its life. I have a street bike if I want to go "fast". I was just thinking about doing the some of the stuff below (for example) to increase drivability.
Speed limiter removed
Raised rev limiter
Raised shift points
3-1 and 4-2 skip shifts (Removes "40MPH WOT lag")
Programmed for race pellet added timing
Transmission line pressure increased
90 second fan on at key-off (when engine coolant is 180 degrees or greater)
PE tables enriched to reduce KR
Part throttle KR issue fixed
Torque abuse modes are modified to eliminate bog at launch
*I respect your guys opinion though, so if I'm flat out wrong, just say so
If it's going to stay stock forever, then you might like the tune. I can do all that. And, you would definitely enjoy the race pellet mod with a tune if you're running race fuel.
Ooops...never mind the race pellet mod.I wont be using race gas. I just copied a generic list of settings.
Thanks for the reply FFDP. The first list that I posted was just a random one I found on the forum that I copy and pasted. As I have no tuning experience, I appreciate your input. So, you would suggest something like the list below?
-3-1 and 4-2 skip shifts
-Transmission line pressure increased
-Increased shift times
-90 second fan on at key-off (when engine coolant is 180 degrees or greater)
-Part throttle KR issue fixed
-Torque abuse modes are modified to eliminate bog at launch
Am I correct in assuming that none of these transmission setting will shorten the life of the tranny? I thought I read that increased line pressure and quicker shift are better for the transmisson. (thought they may feel harsher while driving the car)
Is there anything else that may help the drivability/power/mpg?
If anything it'll usually INCREASE the life of the transmission; you're right there.
Lower shift times mean less clutch contact and thus improving hard part longevity. Does it work for every single car? Maybe not. But I love trans tuning on ANY GM car because of the sloppy, slushy, factory shifts.
Exhaust mods will help with MPG's...but like GTPower said; a few bolt on mods would really reap the full benefits of an in-car tune. Intake, exhaust (downpipe or headers), plugs/wires/t-stat, mounts, maybe a ported supercharger/throttle body. Hell if I was in there I'd buy some L76 valvesprings. Replace the tired and worn ones. Then you could do the intake gaskets, valve cover gaskets, vacuum lines, EGR delete, etc.
With bolt ons, and a pulley...I'd say the tune is worth it.
Id love to have a 3.4 setup on my car, but honestly, money needs to be spent elsewhere. I have a 2001 special edition coming up on 97k miles....so I'm in the process of shopping for suspension and "tune up" parts for now.
And also, since I have my bike, there's not really a need for me to make my car a little quicker. If I want to dick around, I'll hop on my bike
Gas mileage is unchanged if you stay out of the boost on a smaller pulley set up, correct?
