Want to go wider.

So I have a stock 04 grand prix and I'm thinking about putting new wheels on her, but I want to go wider and bigger. I have the factory 16x6.5's, I'd like 20's for sure but my problem is I'm not sure how to go wider with rims. Is there anything else I'm going to have to buy when widening wheels??

I guess specifically in the wheel hub area? I do plan on buying all new tires with the rims.

5x115 and a 70.3 hub bore. 20's? you sure? tranny killers they are.

get some 17 or 18's the ride will be better too with more then a band of rubber.

20's will be rubber band tires, prepare for dented rims and a horrible ride with such small sidewalls. Not to mention the weight of a 20in rim is likely 3x that of the 18lbs stock rim and thats not always a good thing for the car.

You don't have to listen to any of us as it's your car and your money but it would be wise to pick a 18in rim instead as the rims avalible and tire/size are much more common. 245/45/18 is the perfect size.

Alright. I appreciate your guys input very much. Lots of good info on do's and donts. I think I'm gonna go 18 for the sake of the tranny. I looked into wheel sizing and placing. I want my wheels as wide as I can fit in my side wall. I'm willing to roll my fenders if I have to. But I want that wide tire look. Possibly lowering the car later down the road.

so much negativity brought into this thread from people who have never even run larger wheels with lower profile tires, yikes.

how crazy you want to get is up to you, but people have run 20s before with no issues and up to 10" wide wheels as well.

I guess I'm not sure why it would ruin the tranny? I mean how probable is that? And they will be summer shoes anyways. I'll try to take to take it easy on them, not for track use or anything.

And if I go 10 inches wide, I'd definitely have to roll fenders right?

they are heavy and large, so hard to get them rolling. takes its toll on the tranny over time. the ride quality would be enough for me not to go that large, and that ass looking donk look also would keep me from doing it.

Honestly I just want something maybe 8.5 wide. If I can run 20s without rubbing I think I'd be satisfied. So if I find a lighter set of rims is that gunna help tranny at all?

stop worrying about the transmission because of heavier, larger wheels. it's really not a concern unless you're constantly into the pedal heavy from a dig and even then it's whatever.

you can probably run a 20x8.5 wheel without much effort.

and "lighter" wheels are going to cost more than your car.

i run a set of 18x8.5 with a 38mm offset. they sit flush with the inner lip of the rear fenders on my 2001.

Yeah when I do upgrade to new shoes I plan on taking it quite easy. So you've seen 20x8.5s on without fender or side wall work?

roll the fenders anyway. then you won't have to worry about them cutting up your tires if you do happen to get in a situation where they rub.

I'm gonna have to find a quality shop to do that for me. I'm in a small town in the northwest tip of illinois. So it might be a drive to Chicago or something. Any suggestions? I just want quality for a decent price

I'm sure you'd be able to find a shop in any town within 50 miles of Galena. I don't see why you'd have to drive 3 1/2 hours to Chicago just to get some body work done. I know at least one in Savanna, and there has to be multiple shops in Dubuque. All you're doing is rolling the fenders, not replacing a fender.

I guess I just have a hard time trusting local shops nowadays. And I've never had body work done before, I really just don't wanna go to the wrong shop.

Is there any that you hear of that are good or that you'd recommend? Hopefully not get charged too crazy. I know it's a relatively easy job if done right.
