Not sure if this helps but these are my led tails tinted with 2 coats of vht niteshades

Don't think you want to "paint" them, as mentioned above most use VHT niteshade which is basically spray tint in a can.
You can play with the number of coats you use to get them to desired darkness, just keep in mind that the law frowns upon this in some areas.
Thanks for the pics. Red comp that looks good. I was thrown off by the whole painting thing too when i talked to my body shop. I said i've done translucent paint before called vht night shade but it looked like crap when i did because im not a professional. They said the best way to do it is to sand it, Paint it gloss black, then add clear , then buff it out. I guess vht nightshade is just more user friendly but its still just a cheap film so i guess painting it is the right way to go. They said don't worry your going to love it so i guess thats where im forced to be at and believe now.
Yea I think the word paint throws everyone off but I bet you'll be happy. I've seen some good and bad vht jobs that made me not go that route. 6 years and tails still look great I just treat it like I do the regular paint on the car. Same paint was used for the rev and brake light too.. I don't have any pictures of those lit up though.
