I have a white GTP, and under my engine cover looks too dirty, so i decided to leave the clean cover on. but now i want the cover to look good under the hood. I want to paint it a nice glossy white, like the color of my car. How should i go about doing this? and what is a good paint to use?

Rough it up a bit then just spray it with some high temp Duplicolor paint.

Or if you want to go real extreme sand all the texture off of it so that it'll be slick.

Yeah man, ill definitely go extreme with it, i want that thing to look sweet. I figure might as well make the engine cover look nice if im not taking it off completely!

Well, if all else fails I could paint you up one. I can't do awesome stuff like flames and such but I can sand one down smooth and spray it whatever color you want.

If you want it airbrushed or something I have a guy you can contact.

I did my engine cover just yesterday. I used some Kyrlon Fusion spray paint. Its made for spray painting plastic and it worked out real well for me.

Here is how i did it: http://www.grandprixforums.net/paint_plastic.php

Didnt cost me more than $20 for all the paint and sandpaper i needed.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna do white on the engine cover, and make "3800 Series II" black, and then make "Supercharged" red... gonna paint the fusebox cover white also, and do the arms on the side red... ill slowly find things to paint. Just gonna do decals for the writing.

yea, how does krylon fusion hold up with heat? I almost bought it today but i decided not to because when plastic expands under high heat i feel like it might crack eventualy. i think i'm just gonna order some duplicolor high heat paint... do i need to lay down a coat of primer under that?

Guy who got me my paint suggested primer but I didnt use it and its holding up fine. No flaking or cracking yet and it has been about 6 months since I painted it.

    Just my expreiance though.

i like to use primer before i paint, but according to krylon if you are painting something plastics using their product you should not have to prime it first.

im gonna use primer... i might as well just in case. i think based on what ive seen so far 2 or 3 coats Dupli-color self etching primer should work fine, then 4 coats of white dupli-color high heat paint, with 6 or 7 coats of clear engine enamel for the gloss clear coat after that should be fine. i think it will come out good

o and please dont ask about the oil cap...LMAO, it had some oil residue on it and paint wouldnt hold to that. good thing is the crap will probably wear off.

I used the same stuff, krylon fusion. Mine is painted blue. I have painted 2 different covers now and have seen any sign of stress/wear on it. No primer, just take some scotch brite, scuff it up, then use some water and soap and clean the cover. As long as there's no engine grease on the cover, it'll do just fine.
