hey guys, so recently i picked up a '99 gtp 4 door shell. Im planning on putting the engine from my coupe in that and use it as my daily. I was gonna get another engine to build and boost for my coupe. My dad is a welder by trade, and has a lathe and all sorts of other metal working equipment. Would it be more cost effective to have him piece me together a turbo setup? I mean i would still buy the z7 downpipe and crossover from zzp, anything else i need to buy? i mean obviously the turbo, bov, wastegate, IC, stuff like that. I guess i need to know where i could save money by fabrication lol. Im new to turbos. Thanks for the help

Show him some pics of the Z3 kit from ZZP. See if he can replicate that, it is cheaper and easier to fabricate than the Z7 kit. The Z3 kit is just cheaper because it's easier to fabricate, otherwise it can make the same power. You can also talk to Matt M/ ZZP and possibly buy the piping of the kits with no flanges welded on, then weld on the flanges after you decide on the turbo/wastegate you're using. Most likely you will need a TOG downpipe section as well unless he can make that.

Most people have had great luck using ebay "cxracing" parts to piece together an IC kit for less than $400, but if your dad can weld aluminum, just have him weld up the piping and use less clamps and save some money there.

A basic kit would make some great power, but without a built transmission you can't go much further or make a trans last.

yeah, honestly he is probably the best welder in my area, everyone brings him stuff to weld. His welds on aluminum are immaculate. Thats why i want to use his skill to my advantage ha

here is another idea: you use your father as a resource, but do the welding yourself.

seriously, you learning how to do it is MUCH better than him doing it because once he can't do the welding for you then you're just going to have to go back to the shops in your area and get raped again.
