If they did that everyone would just think it was another sub model of the GP...

GXP, GTP, GT, etc are trim levels, not sub-models. The reason Pontiac changed ALL the nameplates is because the average person associates Grand Prix, Grand Am, Sunfire, etc with "pile of dog sh*t cars". Remember, we may tolerate what these cars put us through as enthusiasts, but your average consumer is NOT going to have any of that. The idea was to start with a fresh, clean slate for Pontiac so that these better cars weren't attached to that stigma, all while trying to give the cars a bit of European flare (thus the numbered nameplates).

Then why did they make G8 GTs and G6 GXPs?

For the same reason so many people assume ALL GPs come with superchargers, even the Gen 5s (pre-'97s). The average consumer is not familiar with most trim level acronyms, so it hurts nothing to keep the old trim level letters for the new nameplates. If anything, it helps keep an association for the enthusiasts.

Therefore, this being a GP forum in general (not a w-body forum, or a 3800 forum), it makes perfect sense for there to be a G8 board on it.
LOL Interesting information. I always figured that it was G8 - v8 platform... G6 - v6 platform... but the G5 threw me cuz its not a I5 platform so I just thought it was something else lol

Except they also came in a V6. Remember the '00 concept car was also called a Grand Prix G8?
