Re: are these cars just crap?
I don't think anyone missed the point. I see a couple of people saying all cars have problems and five or six people saying, "no, gps are good cars most of the issues are minor or common for any car this age." Seems to me like you just want a bunch of people to agree with you that they suck.

id hope not, cause your in the wrong place for GP bashing
Re: are these cars just crap?
you have to realize that these cars are 10+ years old. they break because they are nearing the end of their lives on pretty much all parts on the car. stuff doesnt last forever.
besides, nickle and dime-ing you to death is better than a $15k car. its way cheaper.
Re: are these cars just crap?
all in all these are good cars. They are still easy as **** to work on. Motors are bullet proof.
Re: are these cars just crap?
You could buy any Wbody with around 100k miles and replace the entire suspension with better than stock replace the brakes with oem or better if you wanted to and get the transmission flushed and fluid changed easily for a 5k budget max. All said and done a very solid car with new suspension brakes and fresh transmission service. Nevermind the engine unless your modding. For the most part the engines are the last thing to go save for a stupid gaket here and their. 5k Is actually quite high too if you look around in calssifieds. Bang for buck these are hard to beat reason why Im on my 4th Wbody.

Every human gets cancer on the average of 6 to 8 times in his/her life. It's whether or not they have the right capabilities to fight it off or not? This ability results from proper maintenance.
Re: are these cars just crap?
Mine was bought, because of the price and MPG as appossed to a new car price for the same MPG and I needed a 4 door with the kid coming along and my age starting to show. Maintenance cheaper than monthly car payment? If yes, = good vehicle IMO.
Re: are these cars just crap?
I like how people think wheel bearings are just common to these cars. I work full time at a shop and I would say only about 5% of the wheel bearings I do are in a W-body. Blower motor resistor those are a little more common to gm. Cats I would say maybe 5% again are on a wbody. The only real problems associated to a gp are the water in the floor board and the 4t65-e losing 4th gear for pre 2003 transmissions. People have the same problems with all cars, guess which cars you here about breaking here?........gasp....W-bodys, because it is a W-body site.
Re: are these cars just crap?
right, go to any other forums and it will make that car look like crap. there are more people on here to solve problems than anything esle, so whether its a pontiac or beamer, ALL the problem will be on their forums and make the car look like a POS
Re: are these cars just crap?
all cars fail in some way or another. nothing is meant to last for ever. I personally beleive (I will probably get flack for this) modifiying a car will only quicken the process. Yes I know there is a proper way to modify and bad way of doin it. Modifiying by someone who knows what they are doing and modifying other components to compliment eachother is a far better way of modifying. The issue in my opinion is when people just slap on rims and parts without considering the dynamics of the change that it will do that quicken parts breaking. A toyota corolla seems to last forever but no one modifies them (for the most part) and they are all driven at 40 miles an hour. lets pop on over to the corolla forum and see what things they replace. i suspect it is tires, brakes, wheel bearrings, fluids, bulbs, rebuilt trannies....goosh some of the same things we gp owners replace imagine that
Re: are these cars just crap?
I have 249k on my 2000 GP (no kidding). Motor is still strong, doesnt smoke.Take care of them and they will last along time.
Re: are these cars just crap?
i've had mine about 4 years and it's at 107k.. the only issue i have is a lifter tick. since the previous owner let the car go 5-7k between oil changes and im just about to get the trans rebuilt because it lost 4th gear.. other then that mines been great
Re: are these cars just crap?
When you hear of all the problems that CAN go wrong with a car is is pretty discouraging.
Hey I love my 94 GTP, it has 194,000 miles and aside a little rear suspension noise and the PS pump noises I cannot complain.
Ever notice that any problem someone has with a car, it is "known for that"?
I also hear of how much of a pain it is to replace the timing belt. What, people expect THAT to be easy? I have never done a "fun" timing belt on any car.
the only real problem I have is that I drive about 150 miles a week and the gas gauge seems to keep going down. :th_laugh-lol2:
You could be a Taurus owner and have the dooming prospect of the transmission wadding up the gear train and pooping it into the pan.
You could be a Ford Contour/mystique owner and face the possibility of the car having every problem under the sun.
After a couple months ownership, I really cannot complain about my GTP.
I get kind of pissed when people are like, "Oh, the 3.4, good luck, mechanics hate those.." It is like "Well F-U buddy"
When you insult someone's car, you are not insulting their car per se, but their choice as a customer.
Re: are these cars just crap?
my car is a 01 gp gt with a 120k miles its top swaped and besides routine maintnece problems ive had are blower resistor that just whent speedo guage stoped working i suspect a faulty soldier in the cluster and block heater leaking so i had to replace with frost plug and transmission that was just done all in all not bad considering i drive it everyday 35miles each way to work and take it to the track almost every friday block heater was cheap fix frost plug was like 2 bucks and blower resistor and guage cluster shouldnt be to bad either so im very happy with my gp
Re: are these cars just crap?
from the history, my starter has died, i had uber-killed rotors and also, the bearings are dying. other than that i havent had a problem.
do you regular maintenance and tune ups to ensure that your car wont **** a brick on you. doesnt matter american, jap or euro - although if the parts are made in china/mexico etc. don't expect it to last a million miles.

nickle & dime-ing is cheaper?
$1990 Rebuilt Tranny
$800 motor
$276 MAF
$400 in struts at least
$12 S/C oil
$8 everytime i need a S/C gasket
$50 per O2 sensor
$15 radiator hoses
$30 motor mount
$40 tranny mount
$30 tranny lines
$20 for new spark plugs every 5-6k
$70 front brake pads
$100+ everytime the HUD that nvr works ****s up
$105 each taillight
Sure some of that can be considered maintenance but the point is for the price of nicke & dime-ing you could've had yourself that 15K car...
Re: are these cars just crap?
Trans & engine Arent nickel n dime But the rest is

Pre-pay must be regional or something. I don't pre-pay but I'm in Ohio. Consider youself lucky. New Jersey people aren't allowed to pump their gas. I'd NEVER allow someone else to pump my gas.
In regards to the topic, though from the original poster, several have mentioned all the valid points. These are older cars, some have issues, others don't. Just because I have to fix something on an 11 year old car with +120,000 miles on it doesn't mean I think it's crap. Heck, if all new cars were perfect, then there would never be a need for a warranty, so even the new ones aren't without defect.
