Its funny.. When i look back, When i was 17/18 and first started driving, i must have gotten 20 or so tickets my first year of driving, I thought i was johnny rocket bad ass in my 1989 Ford Tempo.
As time progressed, and i aged, it seems like the cops dont pull me over as much.. no matter how ugly / rediculous / fast of a car i have, i think that they see a bearded man driving a car, and completely ignore the fact im doing 70 in a 60.. Then again here in houston, it seems like while im going 60-70 mph, im getting passed up constantly by people going 80-90.. i wonder why everyone is in such a rush.
Im 26 now, going on 27.. and the last time i was pulled over, it was a pretty nice asian man, who pulled me over because a taillight was out.. I was courteous, said yes sir / no sir, and we ended up getting in a discussion about turboing his cruiser, about an hour later, he let me go with a warning, and a firm handshake.
This was at 2:00am off of hwy 99.
The last serious ticket i ever got was because of a really crappy situation. I just purchased a car, 12/24/05, a 92 nissan 240sx, Driving it home that night, an old lady in a 90's cadillac whips out in front of the guy infront of me, He slams on his ABS brakes, and i slam on my "used drift tires, and worn out crappy stock brakes" needless to say, i glided into him with relative ease. about 3 hours later a traffic officer comes by, and explains why he is writing me the ticket, and although i had owned the car for no more than 6 hours, he manages to stick it to me for, expired inspection *ouch* Failure to control speed - accident *really ouch* and then the grand daddy of them all *No insurance*, At the time i thought it was BS, because i had barely owned the car... But after my $1200 240sx turned into a $5500 240sx, (ticket was rougly $1000 - damages from wreck were a 1200 dollar scratch on his honda chitvic's bumper, and my entire $100 front end was destroyed, SR-22 insurance form was like $2,000. AND i had to maintain FULL coverage insurance for 2 years on that POS 240sx.)
Now, can i blame the cop for writing me a ticket, No, it was my responsibility for owning a car to get it insured before i drove it, and to get it road ready / legal first.
Although im sure if i would have been pulled over for just "speeding" he would have cut me some slack, the guy who came out was actually pretty cool, we ended up talking about tire's for his truck, the best brands etc etc.
Overall lesson i have learned in my 11 years of driving experience, Obey the speed limit on the roads that you are not familiar with. Roads that you drive daily, you become familiar with where police illegally poach and setup speed traps. Keep at least 5-6 car lengths in front of you, unless there is a clear escape route for emergency stops.
