I'll start my rant by apologizing because this is going to be a LONG read.

    The following took 3/5/09

So I had been working at Best buy for four and a half years. I was doing the job of Home Theater Installer. I drove the big vans around to customer's houses, setting up their new TVs and Home Theater systems. On this van I drive I have cables that I can sell to customers, these cables were sold by Best Buy in store so they were sku'd and in Best Buy's inventory. Well my manager had purchased third party cables Best Buy does not sell and gave us installers the ability to price these cables as we saw fit, because when they were rung up at the store they were rung up as labor.

Recently my manager calls me and tells me he needs me at the store, so when I went to work that day i was told an investigator was there from Best Buy corporate. He was investing an incident within the store I may have known some information about. When he took me into the Sales Development room, which was a locked room just him and I no one else. He basically started me into a police interrogation. He started out by telling me what his job was and how he was not directly affiliated with Best Buy so he could provide a 'third party' investigation with no bias. After a 15 minute statement on his job duties he began to lecture me. He began to tell me how he already knew facts and anything I would tell him, he already knew. He was looking to see if I was going to be honest, and if I lied, he'd know and would NOT help me out in anyway. He proceeded to tell me that he would be the one recommending Best Buy to pursue charges, order an arrest warrant etc. From here he plainly states, Best buy as a company knows all it's employees eventually do something to lose them money whether it be making a mistake or deliberately. He said there were two types of employees good ones who make bad decisions and bad ones who are malicious. He then asked the most open end question ever. What have you done to lose Best Buy money? Keep in mind at this point I have NO idea why I'm in here still. There first and foremost thing I could think of was that some of these un-sku'd cables I had given away to customers who were irate and upset because of a mess up at the store or any items that were needed and they were not sold. I also mentioned I was not supposed to take tips and I had before. He asked how many cables I had given away I said at maximum I had given away 3. He told me this was not what he was looking for, what he was looking for was more return related.

As I thought back I remembered recently I had returned a set of car speakers (from my burnt Avenger) under a Best Buy service plan. This plan states that I an return these speakers any time within 4 years if they blow etc. , which they did blow. When I did this return the customer service girl (who was the senior of the operations department) returned the cost of the original speakers to gift card, used the gift card to buy the new speakers and handed me the remaining balance on a gift card. Now I returned a set of Alpine 6x9 Type R speakers and had purchased a set of Alpine 6x9 Type S speakers as Best Buy no longer sells the R's. The S speakers as a lower quality were a lower cost of course, so the money back made sense. However I remembered that when I was in the store PSP exchanges were product for product even exchanges, no money involved. However my job title was now Home Theater installer I was no longer in the store, so I couldn't keep up with these policies. I asked the cashier am I supposed to get a gift card, she said it was the new process and I was supposed to. I asked again and she reassured me, and said if anyone asked to have them directed to her. So I used my gift card of 40 something odd dollars to buy some DVDs etc.

Well it turns out when I originally purchased the speakers and the service plan I purchased them separately. I bought the speakers and then bought the service plan at a later date after I got paid. Somehow these two items didn't get tied together in the system. He stated they could find under my name where I had purchased the service plan but could not find ANYWHERE that I had purchased the speakers. I was accused of returning a set of speakers never bought at best buy, accused of working with the cashier to forge a receipt number and service plan number for the return. Luckily I had my original receipts for both in the car. I went to the car and got the receipts and proved to him that I had purchased all my stuff. He took everything and disappeared for 20 minutes or so. I suppose he was looking up the receipt info in the system and/or calling corporate to verify it all. When he came back he questioned why I took the gift card knowing I wasn't supposed to. I explained I didn't know because I am NOT in the store anymore. He suggested that as a Best Buy employee I should have known this all along. He then inquired about why I gave the cables away, I told him it was only under extenuating circumstances and only to satisfy customers in hopes of a return customer.

Of course I was then told all my actions were unethical and was told I was going to sign a piece of paper stating that I would repay Best Buy for three cables at forty dollars each, and the forty dollars on the gift card. So a reimbursement of $160 was now my responsibility. After I signed the paper stating I would repay for these items, I was given a blank sheet and told : "Write a statement basically acknowledging and detailing your unethical acts, apologize and basically ask to keep your job" (Not exact words, but the meaning stands). So I wrote THREE pages stating that I had given these cables away, taken tips and accepted that gift card. Apologized profusely, and begged for the opportunity to continue serving Best Buy. After I signed all these documents, I was told a manager would contact me soon with the outcome of my future with Best Buy. I was escorted out of the store and told I was banned from the store temporarily. I called my manager and explained what just happened, he was shocked at what had just happened and apologized to me. He told me they wouldn't tell him what was going on or why they needed to talk to me. He said he thought was getting a raw deal and would try to figure something out for me.

About 2 weeks later my manager calls me and tells me he needs me to come to the store. When I get there we sit down and he tells me that unfortunately Best Buy has made the decision to let me go. He apologized profusely and said he fought for me and tried to explain that I was a good hard worker. He then had to read me the statement corporate had sent explaining my termination. In this statement they falsely stated that I had used a CUSTOMER'S gift card. He said he asked the general manager to correct this and was told that it was of no use, the outcome would stand. I signed my termination papers and asked him about the money I was said I owed by 3/31/09. He said don't worry about it, he explained that he (who purchased the cables) was okay with me giving them away and could have sworn he told me that. He said that in my statement I said that "I gave the cables away", he said that had I stated WE gave the cables away, acknowledging that he was okay with it, or informed him that I did the situation would be different. I didn't write WE because I didn't want to get anyone else in trouble, after I signed my papers I asked about the money I was to "owe" about the gift card. He said you're already term'd, don't worry about it. Head hung low, I said my good-byes and left.

Today (3/30/09) I get a text from my manager asking if I had received a letter from an Attorney's office. GREAT, I called him trying to figure out what's going on. When i finally got in touch with him, he tells me he needs me to come by the store. He got a letter addressed to no one, but they could see my name inside, so they opened it. He said they stated I owe $512. The money originally stated, plus a $300 something odd dollar civil fee. So, I have to go over there tomorrow and get this letter and get this all figured out. I admitted on good faith that I had given these cables away, my manager was okay with but corporate wasn't. I got fired and now supposedly owe $512, this is just down right ridiculous.

Shortly before this my Dodge Avenger had caught on fire and was totaled, I had to buy a new car (the Grand Prix) taking on a new financial responsibility(loan) and I get fired. I've been applying at places since then, but I cannot find anywhere. I'm a college student signing a lease for my first apartment currently, trying to scrape together a security deposit and find another job that pays about the same ($12/hr part time).

I'm just so frustrated, everyone keeps suggesting I take legal action, but I don't have the money. Plus I signed a statement admitting what had happened. This is just so ridiculous I just don't know how to respond.

    Cliff notes :

I was investigated for something that never happened
Admitted to doing another thing that was allowed by my manager
Was fired for the thing I admitted, even though it wasn't what I was investigated for
Was told I owe Best Buy money for the incident I admitted and a $300 civil fee.

    What do y'all say?

Lesson to be learned, never do this again>>>>

Of course I was then told all my actions were unethical and was told I was going to sign a piece of paper stating that I would repay Best Buy for three cables at forty dollars each, and the forty dollars on the gift card. So a reimbursement of $160 was now my responsibility. I know you were trying to keep your job but you should have told them that you were not comfortable doing this and you would like to speak to a lawyer.

I had something like that happend to me...But I worked for a cash advance place and they (well by they I mean my new DM) said I was using other peoples info to get myself money!!!!! And she fired me and I went to get on my unemployment they declined it I had to wait 8weeks and then I got it!!! O and 2 weeks later she got fired for firing me under false crap! Sooo Karma is a big big big bit*h!!! I would just pray and hope to god your manager dont leave you out to dry! If it was me I would fight it in court! When she was saying all that crap to me it was a BIG deal! I would have been charged with pretty much identity theft!!! I had a lawyer on stand by when she first walked in my store with the auditor and I found out what they was looking for! I was going to fight it!!!

EDIT: Ya, They wanted me to sign my papers saying WHY the fired me and im like umm NO!!!! And grabbed my stuff and left! Now they paid me 396.00 a week to sit at home!! WooT!

word of advice.. when they ask you to sign paper work stating your wrong. DONT DO IT!! your incriminating yourself and that will be used against you. you should have told them NO and walked off. and if they fired for not writing it down, oh well they have to prove your wrong doing but you just admitted to everything and inow its documented. better get a lawyer or at least a consultation to find out your rights in this matter

You should have said you want to talk to an attorney when you were first asked the questions. If they have any evidence against you then they need to tell you why and what is going on, unless it's a murder or manslaughter investigation.

Sorry to hear about it. I had something similar happen. I work at an animal research company as a security guard. We have Chimpanzees. A friend showed up at my job because he saw my car sitting in the parking lot. Not many Daytonas around so odds are it's me. Well I showed him the 2 baby chimps the company has. I guess I should've thought it through because I got written up for it. We have tours through the facility all the time but when I show one person they think I'm apart of PETA and planning to steal animals or something. It was a big power trip by the head Veterinarian at my job.

The only reason i read the whole story is because I used to work at best buy too . The managers there are a F-ING JOKE!! They think they know everything when they don't, and try to act "special". I was fired as well for being late all the time, they took me into that "sales development" room and fired me. Had to sign those same papers but, it was more simple than your case. On another note apply for un-employment , When you work at best buy your some of your check actually goes toward those type of benefits. I hated my job there, managers d*cking me around all the time, moving me in and out of departments I liked. It was like they wanted me to suffer, I was their little as* hat. There are plenty better jobs out there where you don't have to join a gey colt like best buy. That type of job is all politics, it's who you know. Managers were doing all this shady sh*t all the time but, they fire me because I was late and got pulled over on the way to work...please. Go find better.

lol job was gey anyways. Customers always ask the same questions and then they tell you what the product does and they think they know more than you do, and they fail... its sooooo gey. I wanted to stab myself with a dull pencil into my neck everyday I walked in that building. Then a customer asks a stupid question like "how much is it?" uhh wow your dumb, the price is in that big yellow tag on the card that when you really begin to hate your life

yea, you kind of give people a pass when they're being total jerks to you because you know they're 1000x miserable than you are at the moment.

Also questions are encouraged.... I know I want to know what's going on with my body and procedures....

People do that to me at my job also. That is when I point to the sign. Most of them get mad at me for making them look stupid, but it is their fault they can't read.

Id be calling corporate, and id be calling my attorney, what they did was entrapment, you were the fall guy. the warranty thing means nothing, i do this **** at best buy all the time, infact ive have over 15k worth of appliances and electronics replaced by them.

I would highly recommend you seek unemployement fast and your attorney. it doesnt matter what us knuckleheads think, your attorney will get you more then your job back on this one, BestBuy just created monster to be honest, you have so many rights and so many feet to stand on with this.

Please consult your attorney, id tell BB to shove it after the fact but take a few hundred grand from them, they deserve it.

I also call a boycott to BB, how can they replace a computer under their own lemon law thing and only pro-rate the return....... thats my lawyers dilema right now, I go in about an hour to find out exactly how much BB has settled for.

I used to work at best buy a couple of years ago, and was taken into the back room and interrogated several times about various wrong doings that never actually occured. I worked in car audio and one time a kid came in and bought an "open box" amp and paid cash, well in the middle of the transaction the computer froze so i had to re-start it, well after wards the computer only showed the first transaction with no money therefore the drawer was short roughly $300. Next day i get taken into the back room and the manager went on this 30 min rant of the most detailed, thought out heist of how i organize and planned this with a friend to pocket the cash....he described things that even the most criminal mind would have never thought of lol, eventually they reviewed all 8 hours of my shift that day, and issued me a written apology. I never looked at them the same again. Best buy is a shady company.

Wow dude I feel for you. My G/F works for Future Shop (owned by Best Buy) And the managers there are all pices of Crap! They have accused her of conspiracy and sh*t befor too, for something her shift manager pulled! I kinda have a short temper, and when she told me this, I went there and SNAPPED on the shift manager, and got the general manager to hear the whole thing too, by the time I was done the shift manager had option (a) to tell the truth (that HE did the wrong doing, and NOT my girl, Like he was trying to blame it on) or (b) I take him outside and beat the living ***** out of him.

So according to the letter from the attorney. The reason for the $350 civil fee is that in the state of VA if a person is caught shoplifting the merchant is entitled to the amount of goods lost plus $350. So essentially I may have shoplifting on my record. Which really hurts looking for another job.

And I'm looking around for a possible lawyer to see if I can't fix this.

I have to agree with everyone else. Anytime on a job, they ask you to sign anything. Tell them no. If they ask you to write a statement, tell them no, let them fire you. That way you can collect unemployment with no problems. They have to prove a wrong doing, and if you don't give it to them to work with. Too bad for them.

I used to work for Wal-Mart, instead of moving me to management like they were supposed to, and basicaly demanded to. They decided to fire me for something they called "an integrity issue". Needless to say is a bunch of b/s. They didn't want to move me to management because the managers for the local store did not like my visible tattoo's. Although home office didn't mind them. They knew I was a hard working "associate" and that I always got the job done. So instead of letting them fire me, and me writing a statement out for them. I quit.

Should have drawn unemployment from them, just letting them fire me. But I've never been fired, and I wont be fired for b/s. So I went and got my CDL, and make around 8 times more then I made at the piece of crap place. My advice to you is, have a hard time finding a job, get your CDL. It's easy to obtain, and if you obtain it through say your area school bus garage, they will PAY FOR IT. Just make sure to get a air-break endorsement. There are always jobs out there for driving, be it a bus, school bus, or semi. Just a thought.

I'm not a lawyer but if you have not been arrested for shoplifting or convicted of that crime then it would not be on your record, only convictions appear.
Find a good lawyer fast, once you have a wrongful termination suit filed then the so called charge of (shoplifting) could not be disclosed to a potential employer due to pending legal action and I think that also applies to unemployment benefits.......I think
As iamthedeadman stated in regards to the CDL, my ex-wife works for a school bus company as a trainer and they do provide free CDL training.
The problem is that so many people train at that company that once they obtain their CDL they quit so now the company wants to impose a training fee. And there are alot of jobs that require a CDL and some pay very well.
I wish you the best of luck and I hope something good comes out of this for you.
    Don't wait too long
