The Crank sensor normally never throws a code, and "sometimes" the tach will drop to zero and the car shuts off.
To me its sounds alot like a crank sensor problem. They like to be very fussy about everything.
If it was me, I would throw one in.

I'd put even money on a clogged cat.
ok, so how do I check for clogged cat? Ex-Lax in his cat food? Seriously, how would I check for that?
