I bought permatex high temp thread sealant...
good? or should I try Rtv copper (doesn't sound like a bad idea)
something else?
on amazon I read a bad review for the permatex saying it didn't cure

it didnt cure because they slapped it together and started the car right away. you just need to get it on a few threads so it seals the hole. i had coolant seeping out of my threads because i didnt wait and let it dry. redid it and waited this time, all went well.

This is a DIRECT quote from ZZP about headbolt install...

DO NOT USE TEFLON PASTE from GM.
Ended up using it, and after no time the head studs began to weep.
TEFLON TAPE IS KING!!!!

Not sure how you guys are using tape better than paste. If you paste properly there is no issue. I've done paste 5-8 times so far w/o a single leak.
To me paste is better as it gets in all the threads equally. Tape will tear and start to pile up the moment you begin threading.
I'm simply saying, what works better for me.

not sure, but I believe I had it fail (weeping) twice with ARP studs.. same tube.. Maybe it was old? Wouldn't think so as I bought it direct from Intense.
Either way,
This next ARP head bolt install I am going to use yellow Teflon tape and a bit of paste.

I use paste and let it set before i put coolant in
Lately I've been using a product called leak lock with really good success as well. http://www.highsidechem.com/leaklck.html
I'm not a big fan of tape unless its a tapered thread.

i used the ARP head studs for my winter build, just want to say thanks for the tips! this thread was a good help

when you put the head studs in, do you just hand thread them in, or is there another way?

When we did it we had to drive the studs into the heads a bit farther then hand tight.

3/16ths allen and tighten by hand till they stop. use a ruler to check installed height.
if exhaust side (short) studs arent in all the way they can stick up and interfere with certain companies header flanges (you have to grind the flange to clear)
