yeah i couldn't make it out if one or the other were sealed off. the vc looked to be l67

why leave the sc tentioner on the engine tho lol and switch the harmanic balancer to a singe belt n/a? this poor car. now we know why it was 2 grand with a turbo on it.

the good news is you can find a low miles n/a engine for a bout 300 bucks most of the time. with gaskets and fluids your up to 500 or so. and your labor and time of course.

    Frankenstien eh...lol
Looks like a l67 with a l36 LIM and upper plenum for turbo purposes.
I'd pull the s/c tensioner and idler pulley off as they're just going to sieze up anyway but I'd leave the l67 harmonic balancer on the l67 myself...mines the same way, no need to change it.
Looks like a diamond in the rough to me at a good price, with some TLC, fresh gaskets(and maybe a new short block) and cleaning up it should work pretty good.

So, the boy has had the car out all day and I haven't had a chance to do anything to it, but, I have another question. And please save the sarcasm. I still think, for the purpose I bought it, I got a nice deal.

The exhaust and the turbo pipes are routed under the car side by side and are touching each other. They rattle (only occasionally) and I'd like to figure out how to stop it.

Can they be clamped together so they move together? They can't be pushed apart. There's no room.

you did get a good deal, sadly all that plumbing should be taken off, along with the cooler up front, a bumper support put back in, the cooler mounted properly and the pipes re routed. its all done 100% wrong. will it work the way it is? yes, is it done right? hell no. with the cooler mounted right it will get a lot more air to it also, vs the lic plate size hole its got now. thus cooling the intake air even more.

if you have any front impact with that car and it over asap. its a large bumper under the cover there, with that gone you have no protection up front at all if in a crash. even a slow crash, sh its gonna fold.

Yes you got a good deal, but like we have all said, its gonna be a headache before its just a joy to drive. It does look like it was beat to piss and then some fresh plugs thrown in to sell it. I also agree that if the hot and cold pipes are touching or that close you should just re do all of the cold side (the side that goes from the turbo to intake manifold) with a better intercooler and piping done right.

Oh you are right the intercooler needs to go up front like that. But you can do a much better job without the massive amounts of cutting and making it look hideous!

the right thing to do is to re do the pipes, they are not done right, this is why they touch and rattle.

the proper place is under the bumper support. in the lower air vents. they do tend to stick out the bottom of the bumper cover but thats where it belongs.

that looks like its just the foam, you'll need that too. theres a steel boxed bar that is the bumper.

The intercooler is mounted to a steel boxed bar. I'll snap pictures if the boy ever comes home. Hope he's not STRANDED! Dang I wish I hadn't said that........

Well without seeing it in person its hard to give good advice on the piping. But as a general rule. You want as short of piping as possible with as few massive turns as possible. If it was me, I would be looking for an old DSM intercooler that was made by HKS, for the simple reason it had the in and out on it on the same side, which would make piping short and simple since the turbo is on the same side as the inlet to the intake manifold. But that's just me.

Some of these guys are making assumptions, I gurantee the bumper is there. Lots of turbo guys cut out some of the foam to install a bigger/taller intercooler, I've seen the front plate recess in the bumper cut out on quite a few cars with oversize intercoolers.
We havn.t seen a good picture of the whole front bumper back side or front have we?

Best move would be to find someone with some knowledge of turbo 3800 cars to help go over the car with you.
