Yeah! At least you're smart with your 4 seasons. My winter tires are good, but sometimes, all the tires in the world couldn't help a car in the conditions here.

The only people who say "you don't know how to drive if you need snow tires" are the people who have never owned a set of good snow tires. I would rate a w-body about one step above a 2 wheel drive s10 in winter conditions. They just plain suck, the first year i had my car i put brand new all seasons on the front in november and the first time it snowed I skid through a red light at 10mph on full abs with no ability to stop what so ever straight out into the intersection to about 6 inches away from the side of somebody's truck. Later that day I put the a/s on the back and put brand new altimax arctics on the front. It still wouldn't stop for **** but you could push snow over the hood without getting stuck.
Hold on, you only put new tires on the front at first????? No wonder you skidded through an intersection!!! It takes 4 tires to stop. And why are you mixing tires? It's either all All Season, or all Winter. I wouldn't blame the car in this instance
I've got a base model Grand Prix; No TC, no ABS, and I've yet to have an issue in the snow.
I've driven on many all seasons, and a couple of snows.
Tread depth matters more for snow than whether or not they're snow tires.
Below ~7/32nds, any tire manufacturer will tell you you're going to have compromised snow traction.
Putting snows on the front and not the rear is dangerous and I think anyone who knows tires and winter driving would tell you that. Based on your post it sounds like you've owned a total of 2 snow tires so have you owned a set? Stopping safely is the most important factor in this discussion; if you cant stop safely then im failing to see what the point of amazing acceleration is.
Here's what I'm hearing: "I bought a car that i claim 'sucks' in the snow and feel it requires snow tires - so I bought 2".... "now it goes real fast but can't stop"
Sounds like a whole lot of driver error going on here.
I had winters on the front and it's not dangerous just normal driving. I don't recommend it though. With my Tiburon it was fine the back end slid out but then just keep her in control. If you drive cautiously then you should be good. Had moved those tires over to the front of the gp and it was totally fine as well. I do realize that if I was speeding or not braking early under hard deceleration the back and would try to pop out

To the OP what tires are on the front because just because they are good, doesn't mean they will do well in snow. If they are summer tires they aren't going to do sh#t in the snow. I know people who swore their AWD car sucked in the snow, and then they revealed they had something like Kuhmo Ecsta LE's on it. Those are high performance summer tires and will not go in the snow.
As for the other conversation winter tires are far from mandatory if you have even an inkling of how to drive you do not need winter tires. The only way I would recommend winter tires is if you have a RWD car/2WD truck as your only means of transportation.
I find it hilarious that people think a car is at fault for not going good in the snow. The tires as well as the driver are not the fault of the car.
I love hearing you guys talk about snow scraping the bottom of your cars as a lot of snow.... and here I am having issues with my intercooler heat exchanger getting packed with snow along with my fog lights... Though I do have the tendency to ram my way through 1-2 foot drifts.... Really though if you have decent tires (Personal favorite is the general altimax hp) then its all up to how you drive. When it gets really really nasty out you need to keep moving so you don't get stuck ect ect. I havent had working abs for years so I cant comment on that.
It's fun blasting through drifts at high speed (25+mph). I will say we had our first snow in MN today and it's horrendously slippery. My tires weren't gripping like I remember they did last year. Just have to be light on the throttle and think ahead for stopping. Am I admitting that I'm wrong about the ability to run regular all seasons year round? Of course not!
A pair of snow tires would sure be nice though![]()
First of all, you incorrectly read my post. I was almost in an accident at no more that 10mph on 2 inches of snow because the car REFUSED to stop in a distance of atleast 40 ft with 3 day old all seasons on the front and 1 year old all seasons on the back. SO no this has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with have a mix of snow tires and all season tire on the car. It simply has to do with the fact that the piss poor ABS design essentially disables the brakes when there is no immediate traction available. Furthermore the car was perfectly "safe" to drive with snow tires on the front and all seasons on the rear.
Secondly, have I ever owned a car with snow tires on all four....lol.....yes. I have...and it was the best handling vehicle I have ever driven in winter conditions, it featured no suicidal ABS, low engine power and torque which did wonders for traction and a stick shift. Unlike the grand prix, when you stomped the brakes even on 2-4 inches of snow the front tires would lock up and dig into the snow and the car would stop very quickly. I could run the freeway in blizzard conditions in the unplowed fast lane and drive around most every 4wd truck on the road. It could also plow snow with the headlights. In comparison to all those features I stand in my opinion that w-bodys SUCK in the snow.
THIS is what i expect from snow tires

Do the disable abs mod and you will no longer have a suicidal car (I hate that, it's happened to me too, it literally disables the brakes). Mine does great in the snow even with bald all seasons, w-bodies always seemed to do great in the snow with their front heavy design. The back end will sometimes swing out with cheap tires.
I have retired mine from winter duty since the first year I had it. It has too much power and too nice of a body. I have a 94 Z71 that I drive through winter now.
Yanking every single abs related wire![]()

I always solved this whole my car doesn't get around in the snow problem by having a truck...
