    I presently have an Overkill Tune but am thinking of getting HP Tuners to do my own tweaking with regards to further optomising performance from my O2 GTP, is this a huge learning curve for someone with no experiance and how user friendly is this Tuning Equipment?
    2002 - GTP, KN-CAI, Autolite 104, Magnaflow CatBack, ZZP 3" DP, ZZP-Plog, Overkill Tune, ZZP MPS 3.6" pulley, Don Rome STB, Mobil 1 Syn, Transgo Shift Kit, Flipped Dogs.

    It does take time to understand how HP Tuners works or any tuning for that matter. But the 3800 is one of the easiest to learn on for sure. They are so simple compared to something like a LS motor or the like.

    Reading and reading and playing with the equipment and scanner functions are the best way to get used the product. I suggest buying a book or two just to get yourself more knowledge. Greg banish makes a nice book call engine management advanced tuning. It won't tell you much about how the software itself works but more so how certain things work with each other and what they mean. The book is worth the 20 bucks for sure.


    HPT is far more user friendly than DHP ( I think). HPT has real support, it's a software that is updated nearly daily and can tune far more vehicles if you ever wish too. Sure DHP is cheaper but it has too many flaws in my eyes, though I only know HPT by heart now. I'm sure DHP is nice in some cases and once I understood it better, I would like it for some things but again it's dated and can only tune 3100, 3400 and 3800 cars. I've tuned several LS cars and trucks now, so HPT has been what I always recommend because I understand it better.

    The price for HPT is higher aswell, which does turn some away but in the end it's still an awesome price for what you get and the upgrades and support it offers.

    A small downside that some think, is the credit system. It comes with 8 credits right off the bat, each car/vin/computer costs 2 credits. So if you did all single licences, you get 4 cars for "free" in a way. Everything past that costs 2 more credits for $50 each, so $100 to tune a car an unlimited amount of times is an alright deal.

    Thanks so much for taking the time to provide a detailed response and book recomendation which I ordered this morning, I will do some reading and at this moment I am leaning towards a purchase of HP Tuners Pro, hoping someone is selling at a good price on Black Friday, any other info or advice would be appreciated.

    Make sure to check if OVERKILL locks their PCM/tunes otherwise you wont be able to access the PCM.

    Overkill doesn't lock his tunes. I'm with ffdp on this that hp tuners is a better tuning package. It's more intuitive than dhp.

    Another option is to buy the hp tuners and have overkill use your data for more precise tuning

    I have a 98 GTP with a DHP 1.0. Lucky for me, the ECM isnt locked. I have been tinkering with my tune (HP Tuners) and getting way better gas mileage than ever before. I havent done WOT tweaking YET but Im pretty sure she has some power there to unlock.

    Get the HP Tuners. You wont regret it. I also have a G8. All cammed up and tuned....
    1998 GTP Coupe: Self-tuned with HPTuners, 3.4, FWI w/ 12 inch K&N, Autolite 103's, hot-wired FP, Caspers fan override, 180 t-stat, Speed Daddy headers, SLP exhaust w/ GTX tips, 12 inch brakes (Riviera/Impala), 6000K HID's, solid rubber engine and trans mounts, poly dogbone inserts (SOLD 3/2020!!! )

    Thanks guys, my plan at present is to do some reading as per Greg Banish's Engine Management Advanced Tuning book and upon purchasing HP Tuners Pro, I will most likely have Will at OverKill review my data and hopefully along the way gain a better understanding of Tuning.
