ok ok lol i made a mistake and bought a 2004 f150 with the 5.4l. Only reason i got it is bc i got a really good deal on it and it is in great shape. I'm a die hard gm fan, and this truck has reminded me why lol. Here's the problem i'm having, I copied and pasted from an f150 forum.

125k miles. Ill describe the problem best i can as few of words i can.

ok, so the problem is with the motor. At idle it has a real bad tick ( at some points it sounds like a "diesel" as some people describe). and it has no power when you go wot, it just falls on it's face.

-after the truck warms up (5 or so miles) the truck will buck or hesitate at lower rpms when you give it a little gas to speed up, when the motor is under load ( mainly when in OD). smooths back out when you downshift and raise the rpms

after this problem ^^ occurs, a little while longer the truck will completely bog down in any gear, at any speed or any rpms when you give the truck even a little throttle.

now when this problem ^^ happens, at idle the truck will sound tremendously worse then just ticking. it sounds like the light ticking 100 times faster and louder. Turn the truck off and start it again, it goes away and sounds like it did in the beginning of this thread.

I got a code for bank two overly advanced timing. Replaced the vct solenoid and both cam sensors. was able to drive the truck a lot longer before the bad ticking noise started...although i did use it to pull my brother out of the ditch and as soon as i pulled him out the engine started making the real bad knocking noise.

Any ideas here at all? anything at this point would be helpful lol

Hopefully someone here has experience with these motors and can help lol I'd appreciate it a ton

The cam phasers in those motors start to tick really loud when they go bad, common issue.

The valve train is also noisy in them aswell, a phaser issue just makes it worse. Tractor, diesel or just a clapped out motor is what I like to call them. Some will run a thicker oil like a 5W40 to stop the noise LOL.

Those codes if present could make full throttle an issue.

They also are known for misfires on older plugs. BUT thats where the 3V curse comes into play. The sparks plugs are pretty unique and extra long, then tend to get carbon build up on them and get stuck in the cylinder head when you remove them. Most get lucky and they come right, others have to remove the heads and get a machine shop to remove them. You could try fuel cleaners and seafoam several times to try and break up the carbon build up before you tried to remove the plugs.

yeah i read about that phasers and the plugs lol. What really confuses me is how it'll start knocking really bad, you shut if off and start it back up, and it just has the light ticking sound again. Thanks for the response btw!

I also wouldnt rule out a rocker/lifter issue. A co-worker on mine bought a blown up expedition 2 years ago, we figured a broken phaser or timing chain but it turns out the 3rd valve broke a rocker and the lifter and stuff went all nuts and destroyed the head.

1 swapped head later and it ran like a champ.

    ok, motor is toast lol.

this is just one cam journal and cap. Didn't bother pulling the rest. From what I hear, the heads are super expensive and would make more sense to just replace the motor with a crate engine

Definetly fixable. Car-part.com and maybe even the F150 fourms can come in handy here.

And yet another reason I still like the old 7.3L....

Wasn't part of the problem with the heads that they would blow plugs out of them, or is that a different version of the 5.4 I'm thinking of? I've seen common exhaust manifold cracks/etc as well on these things.

Looks like you found the issue though. Sorry to see that.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

That was the older 4.6/5.4's that had that issue. The 3 valve got rid of that issue and introduced the "seized into the head 2 piece spark plug" issue, lol... And yea, the exhaust mani's can crack, more common is the exhaust mani studs rust out and cause a leak. Had to do both mani's on my boss' 99 F150 5.4. Talk about a bunch of suck, lol...
