I don't really know enough about long range shooting to even speak on it, but I am so old-school that I think the '06 is cool thats all. You didn't bring less to deer camp back in the day, haha. I currently own a Remington Woodsmaster 740 30-06. And I love it very much for deer hunting. Just its flight plane is not flat enough beyond 500-600 yards from what I have read.

at like 600 yards the 3006 drops like 50 inches, or somewhere around there

Well woops on my part. Bullet type, weight and shape, powder n primer type, charge weight and consistency, case condition and consistency, barrel length, cleanliness and condition, headspace, etc all come into play it but 30-06 seems to be a hot button, so stepping off... I'm a wood gun war movie buff so shoot me lol, at least I had the sense to not say Garand, right?
For the rodeo clown distraction effect, I'll mention how fun it was trying to stretch out the trusty 45ACP at 80 yds prone. Years ago on a Texas grassland I got 8 of 11 in an 18" square with a modded Thompson 1911. Ha. Fun because the setting sun was at my back and I had some medium loads with TMJs in them and they were visible the last several yards, catching the sun. I might have done better not laughing so much. Off I go before a ballistic table appears!

I wasn't trying to jump down your throat, but if that's how I came across, I apologize. I haven't hunted in several years, but when I did, it was with an older model savage 110 30-06. the gun was very accurate, but I never shot at much past 100 yards.

Aw no worries here, a guy just never knows and I sure don't want to over- react. Might have. Never had much luck hunting, myself. Ate everything I shot though.
A friend and I went through the rifle nut phase back around the ban era and I had an Inland M1 carbine which is a POS but it was my entry level thing and I loved it. Graduated to the M14 later. My friend did Garand first, and I ended up doing a glossy walnut stock finish for him using auto paint stuff lol. That is a nice piece now, I'd sure love to have one like it. He built a match M14 after that and ended up with the Remington 700 and Leopold which is pretty much the ultimate deer-picker-offer. I think he missed once since so shame on him. Lots of guys use 270s and 7mm mags but even 100 yd shots are pretty rare in Arkansas. Don't think I've ever been to a place where 1,000 yds was available! Even 30-30s and SKS are effective here for deer, but this thread is about long range targets so I'll stop ramblin.

does the gun have to be bolt action? I've been looking at the gen 2 dpms ar-10. I thought it looked pretty sweet, partly because of the decreased weight when compared to standard ar-10's.

How about a Mosin Nagant? Just don't buy any rusty old POS either. Look for one that may have been used as a "sniper rifle". Mitchell's Mausers at www.mauser.org can help out greatly in helping you identify or even sell you one. 7.62X54r is no slouch and can be found in bulk on almost all ammo sales sites.

You can purchase a Korean War era M1 Garand from The Civilian Marksmanship Program or www.CMP.org for well under a grand depending on condition. You have to be a active member of a CMP approved club or range and meet just a few of their criteria, like proof of membership, proof of competition or skill and of course the background check. I should have mine anytime now( 4-5 month lead time) I paid just over $700 for a Service Grade rifle.
