The ''Painted supercharger thread''

Trying to get some idea's on painted superchargers. It can be painted powdercoated or whatever. Just not polished.


Figured it might be good for some other people looking at this option as well. Post some up close and far back shots if possible.

This should be a good thread as I have been looking around myself. Im not real sure I want the headache of maintaining stuff that has been polished. It looks dang good to be sure, but with that comes the need to maintain that polished state.

So Im very much looking forward to the painted jobs to get some ideas myself.

Just a warning on Powdercoating blower housings- I have seen a handful of them warped and destroy the rotors from this so beware! Also at the machine shop I used to work at we rebuilt Eaton superchargers and built some for a company that used them for custom swap projects and we did powder a few of them and were fine but it is a pain as the case has to be completely stripped down bare, and then there is always some overspray that is a chore to clean up. Tom Glover had a Gen V that was powdercoated or maybe that way when he bought it and the case and rotors were in bad shape because the very top of the case there the point is between the two rotor bores had warped and was chewing into the rotors so maybe he can chime in and post some pics if he still has the parts. When I paint my cases I like to cook the case a bit to get all of the moisture out of it and it really seems to help the paint stick better and not want to flake off. I do this either with my heat gun or a torch lightly and is pretty quick and easy to do, just follow the moisture shadow around until it is gone.

LOL. I see we think alike. If it will fit in the oven, I'll bake it at about 250* or so for a while for just that purpose.

mine was painted red until i disconnected the fuel lines. now its red and silver colored. its also full of salt and dirt.

I like that. I like the flat black look on the supercharger. That's why I posted that first picture.

Flat black looks cool, and if you have some shiny chrome parts around it, DAMN! Imagine a set of chrome fuel rails over the top of that. /drool.


Here is a GenV (plus other parts) I powder coated for a customer. I agree, though everything that should of been masked off was, there still was a lot of cleaning up to do, and I felt that it was not the customers job to do that, so a few hours later with a file...I had all the mating surfaces clean and flush again. The owner has some installed pictures, maybe he will chime in. Looks killer installed.




And if you do powder coat..make sure you take everything apart like you should...and not have it done complete. Prime example would be a GenIII snout that was done by another guys friend, and its a good thing he didn't run it, cause of the amount of sand that was inside it.

Rebuilt, and fully-fully cleaned, mating surfaces filed smooth and flat again, and a MPS hub pressed on



Painting...lots and lots of cool ones showing up now a days. Almost everyone who paints one has some really creative designs, color combos and techniques. Not to forget those airbrushed ones...mad skills on a lot of those. This thread should get rather interesting when all those pop in here. Great to see everything together, great thread idea!

the flat black looks really good, i was thinking that or maybe a truck bed coating, not sure how good the tb coating would hold up though.

Is that plain flat or is that the Krinkled finish? I have done a few krinkle paint jobs on blowers and valve covers and it does look pretty nice and is definately different! Also since painting the plastic valve covers is hit and mis for those who didnt know the 05 or 06+ L32 valve covers are molded in black so no more paint chipping off!

its just regular rustoleum bbq flat black, it held on the covers well. it uses heat to bond. so underhood temps are great with it

my valve covers are flat black. i like the black/red contrast i have going on, but im not sure i have any good pictures of it.

besides, my engine bay is ugly and i never open the hood unless someone wants me to show them. it's not a show car, it's a race car.
