Any of you folks ride mountain bikes, road bikes, cross bikes, whatever? I'd be interested in how you haul your bicycles.

I personally use a Saris Bones 2 bike but it's got a terrible fit on our cars for long distance travel and it pretty much makes it so you can't use your trunk.

If my GP wasn't my main mode of transport then I wouldn't use it to haul my cycles however at 210k miles, 2 hail storms, hitting a deer this fall, and owning it since 2005 appearance isn't really a huge concern anymore.

I used one that mounted to the trunk but I did not like the way it felt going down the road. since my bike has quick release rims and brake cables I just took it apart and put it in the trunk instead of on the outside on a bike rack, it is also more safe from theft that way also.

Saris bones 3 never can never use the closest spot on my car, Hardly use it though usually use the truck with a hitch carrier that's much more secure

Bicycle racks go on a Toyota Prius. Awww, that's terrible. I apologize. Just couldn't help myself.

When I need to take my bike somewhere I just take off the tires and through it in the trunk, that has been the easiest thing so far. For a while I was using the saris bones 2 but didn't like that I couldn't use my trunk, so went back to using the trunk. If you don't mind spending the money Thule and Yakima have some good roof racks.

Well my trunk contains audio equipment so that isn't happening. I used to take off the wheel and use the back seat but I bike often enough a rack is needed for convenience.

You could prob get a roof rack mount from Thule or such - will prob cost you more than the car but you can use the trunk

Buy a trailer hitch and a hitch mounted rack. This is the setup I have and it is very secure- also I can still open the trunk with the rack on. I honestly think I could race around a track with my bike on the back without anything going wrong.

The only thing I don't like about the roof racks is you have to lift your bike onto the roof, which may or may not be a big deal depending on how much your bike weighs. Also, you run the risk of driving into your garage if you forget your bike is up top - that never ends well.

I have never seen a trunk mount on any car that looks like it functions well or is convenient.

With my car being lowered and my driveway steep I don't think a hitch type setup would work well. It would be easier to buy a different car However I have thought about getting one for the wifes G6 eventually after we pay the car off next April.

Your best bet if you don't want to go with a hitch mount and can't put it in the trunk is to get a rack for the roof, they are pretty expensive. Thule has a pretty good one but I think the pedestals alone are around $190 then you have to get the cross bars and the bike rail. It ends up being almost $400 or so. Yakima also has one and the pedestals for that are $190 as well. Just look around though, those are prices from carid.com so you might find them cheaper looking elsewhere.

I know this an old thread, so let me get it out of way. Holy thread resurrection Batman!

But just in-case the info is still useful to anyone. For years I used a Saris Bones 2, as stated it was a pain using both spots since it not designed for our car's spoiler. Though most of time I only needed the one spot, when I did to take two bikes I found it easier use the back seat and trunk.

The other issue with the bones is that it eventually left a bunch scratches on the bumper and trunk no matter how much cleaning I did before mounting. This didn't bother too much when paint was fading, but after the repaint I had to look at different options. I even bought a hitch, but never decided on rack for it(still in the garage).

Before I made up my mind the hitch rack I found the SeaSucker suction cup series of racks. I settled on the Mini-Bomber as it mount two bikes, kind of pricey at about $400, though they have single bike version for about $300.

This has been my bike hauler the last two years without any issues. I did have to get past the whole its suction cups holding my bike at highway speeds thing, but the system has been reliable, can be placed almost anywhere on car, easily goes on and off, and doesn't scratch my new paint.

Hope this helps if anybody looking into a bike rack.

I use a 1.25 or 1.5 inch receiver mount hitch for my bike rack, I don't remember what size it is, but it's not big. the hitch is useful to have as well because it makes loading onto the tow truck or get pulled back onto the road simple.
