So my gf drives a '11 Mercury Milan with 60k on it. She was driving home from work the other night and was doing around 40mph cause there was heavy fog. While driving her car lurched forward and the rpms were bouncing up and down. The transmission light came on so she pulled over, put it in park, turned the car off and sat for a few minutes. Turns the car back on and everything is working fine again. wth happened? I'm thinking a transmission fluid change will help since it's never been done but is there something more seriously wrong? Was it a fluke? She drives a lot of miles each day to and from work and can't have a car that could leave her stranded.

If the light came on, it set a trans related code.

I would get that code and start searching on the internet for problems like that with your car.

Not sure about that but if it's anything like their capless gas tanks i bet it's a pita.

Found online that that car went into "limp" mode because it noticed something wrong. Basically it shuts itself down before anything bad can happen. By turning the car off and on it resets it and if it doesn't happen again right away you're ok i guess. Sounds weird. She's looking into getting a GM now haha.
