I usually put in either partial or full synthetics in my vehicles, and the past three vehicles have had some kind of Oil Life gauge. I put 130k miles on my Grand Prix, and never had engine trouble. It was just everything else. Impala I've put about 70k miles in 6 years. The only major problem I had was shortly after buying it the brake computer had to be replaced. No engine trouble. My Mercury Mariner Hybrid is about to hit 100k miles, and the engine it is fine. Of course the engine doesn't have 100k miles, but I assume as long as I keep up with the oil changes at the proper times, I should be able to drive it another 100k. I hope it will be the battery giving out at 200k before anything else.
