Because it makes no sense to have two full size sedans in the same brand. The G8 was always intended to be the GP's replacement when they decided to bring it from Australia.

Besides that, the GP is based on a 20 year old platform (w-body). It's old.

    seperate statements I'm assuming?

I'm a big fan of Mazda as a matter of fact. The RX-7 was revolutionary with the power it could make compared to it's displacement. The phrase "There's no replacement for displacement" is completely false when you factor in a rotary engine. Mazda 3 is crap, but the Mazdaspeed 3 is a monster. It will be a breakthrough model in the circle track Fwd performance world. Fwd could potentially even up the score with AWD and RWD with this platform! There are many cars on my wish list, and I will say the Mazdaspeed 3 is near the top.

Rotories are only cool when you rev them up high. In normal day-to-day driving, even under a little boost, the RX-7s and RX-8s were pigs.

That may be, but like Quicklynx said, it threw conventional wisdom out the window. Couple that with the fact it has what maybe 10 moving parts if that and is naturally balanced. If more manufacturers were making rotaries we'd probably see some real advancement there. The draw back to them is that its really tough to get them to meet current emissions requirements.

That is the big downfall of rotary. They are gas guzzlers! RX-8 rating is like 18-19 mpg highway, and that's what the dealer rated it! However I was referring to performance out of a rotary. Rotary engines were banned from the Le Mans and GT series because the 3 Rotor 20B RX-7s were destroying everything on the track due to all the power they could make without going against displacement regulations. Destroying is an understatement! Pending any issues, the lead RX-7 literally broke away almost 45 minutes to the next closest manufacturer, which was a Porsche! Unfortunately, like many rotaries do, the engine blew up. If anyone follows time trials in the 24 hour races, most cars are within 2-10 minutes of each other, if that! Mazda fought to allow them to put the RX-8 into competition. After almost 10 years they lifted the ban in the GT series and reset the displacement regulations specific for rotary, and only allow 2 Rotor engines. The thing had so many extra regulations on it, and it still did quite well in the 2007 Rolex. If anyone else watched, you'd be proud because a G6 GXP destroyed the GT series and all it's Porsches and BMWs involved!

Except for the fact that the G6 they use for those races is RWD..... If you watch, it spins the back tires when it takes off from the pits

And rotorys are one of those things that are great in theory, but don't work as well in real life, the Rotary in the mazda 8 gets worse gas mileage than most V8's......and engine rebuilds every 80k don't help either(But piston rings last 300k+ in standard(4 - cycle) motors, so I'm sure with the right investment they could find a way to do it......but it'll probably burn a lot of oil still )

And the rotory applies to the G8 replacing the GP how?

GM learned from caddy that you can't have two of the same size cars selling in the same brand. Just look at the abysmal sales of the STS.

Also don't forget the G8 also replaced the Bonniville. Sales were falling and Pontiac was trying to slim down the number of models. The G8 was a good compromise between the midsize GP and the full size Bonnie.
