why does everyone think there car is worth double the actual value and then when you offer them a reasonable amount then get offended?

    heres some examples
    1998 Trans Am WS6 6 SPD

i drove this car, the entire suspension is shot, the rear end is toast, the seats are torn, the trans is bad, and it has 182k miles on it, its probally worth about 3500-4000 fixed up its not worth more then 6500 bucks

    1998 trans Am black

i judt dont know where this guy came up with 12 grand for a 15 year old car with over 100k miles on it, you can get newer fbodies with 70k on them for under 10 grand nowadays

The black TA I understand is way high. The WS6 isn't awful...does have a lot of miles though. Local guy has an 02 with 40k asking $17.5. I sold my 02 anniversary edition in 08 for $26.5, but it only had 4600 miles. $5700 isn't too bad, but the description sounds kinda sketchy!!

It's because most people go off of what they FEEL their car is worth as opposed to actual hard data and statistics. Many of them also feel they should be reimbursed/are owed for maintenance and modifications. They don't want to take a loss on these things, so they figure it into the price of the car not understanding no one is going to pay for the previous owners repairs. People don't seem to understand that cars are not an investment. They are just money pits. Repairs and maintenance are things you HAVE to do just to be able to ask for "good condition" prices. They're not things you can add on TOP of the "good condition" book value.

The first one says in the ad he bought it as a project car, but is now hit with a lawsuit and has to sell it. If I had to guess, he's trying to sell it without taking a loss on it because maybe he knows he paid too much for it to begin with.

if youre not the one selling the car you cant argue with what price they put up. its their choice on what they want in return for it, not yours.

too expensive? find another one. there's always another one.

Certainly no one is arguing on what they can and can't charge. My gripe is with some of the excuses and logic people use to try to justify their price. "Super rare" or "mint condition" or "collector car" when none of it applies. It usually comes from people who don't even really know a whole lot about the car, or cars in general, or don't fully understand how pricing is calculated, but still form opinions out of their ignorance, or are hoping to con someone else even more ignorant.

It's just like someone on Chicago Garage who was asking too much for an Alero. Others told him it's too high of a price, but I didn't get involved because it wasn't my place to do so. His car, his choice on price. However, then he tried to justify how his is probably the best conditioned Alero for the year because it's already had LIM gaskets done, and this and that problem which N-bodies are known for, thus why he feels his car is worth more than RETAIL book value. It is only at this point I stepped in to mention that all those repairs have to be done just to ASK for the high end book value of a car. Just read the condition requirements in order to ask "excellent condition" prices. Those things are already taken into consideration when they come up with the pricing. It wasn't structured for you to take your bills, and add them on top of the high end value of the car in an attempt to get reimbursed for your costs of ownership. You would basically have to wait for an idiot who did no research to come along and buy it from you for near that much.

Think about it. If that were how it worked, why would anyone buy an older or used car? You could either buy an '05 with a bunch of work done to it for a high price....or you could get a '10 or '11 of the same car for nearly the same price because it hasn't needed any major work yet, thus doesn't have thousands of dollars added to the high end book value.
