This is why I have a 9, it's plenty of protection for me. A smaller gun like a .22 will give most people enough of a sting to realize you have plenty more shots, a .38 or 9mm had enough punch to ensure the guy thinks twice before wanting to say "may I have another" and well.. a .40/10mm are close to the line where the jury begins to look at you funny.

No matter though, it's a huge responsibility pointing a gun at a person, one I'm hoping to never need to do.

I am looking around for a different shotgun though. Want something I can go hunting with that won't try and beat me down in the process.
Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 are going to be your best bet Bill. Fair priced and both really reliable. Will shoot just about whatever kind of rounds you put through it. I'm partial to my 870's, but the 500s are great guns as well.
