Thread: Mind degerously wondering

I found my mind wondering at work a few nights ago what would be the performance benefit of running an engine on pure oxygen like you buy for your torch. I was thinking of starting on small scale with an old lawn mower and maybe moving up to a junk car if i succeed. Time for another red neck high performance lawn mower.

This may sound funny to some but really it's good thinking. And to some extent, this has been done already. Think of nitrous oxide (N2O) if you will.

When nitrous oxide is heated to about 570 degrees F (~300 C) and injected into the intake manifold, due to pressure changes it basically splits N2O into oxygen and nitrogen. With the injection of nitrous oxide into an engine that basically means that more pure oxygen is available for combustion. Having more oxygen allows you to inject more fuel, allowing the same engine to produce more power.

The Nitrogen part of Nitrous Oxide improves performance by providing a significant cooling effect on the intake air.

So 01GTP, your idea isn't not that far out into space. Pure O2 would just be a bit less efficient than N2O.

^x2, had the same idea when I first started racing dirt cars, my uncle gave the same to-do.

yeah i was relating it to N20, but i had a theory that it might be more effective because of the induction method of the air intake being directly connected to a pressurized tank with regulators you would have the effect of a s/c or t/c with out the heat of the compression and even have cooler air the only problem would be the trailer with the tank your would have to pull for all the air killing your ets lol

if only our bodies could handle high levels of oxygen. We could lose weight so much faster if that was the case!
